    Experience an evening in Harlem to discover the history of jazz and blues and to listen to some rhythms at the Cotton Club.

    Harlem’s role in the history of jazz and noted jazz musicians gave New York its musical edge.

    As you arrive into Harlem, you’ll enjoy a sightseeing drive of the neighbourhoods associated with jazz and blues. See the original Cotton Club where Duke Ellington and Lena Horne spent many hours wowing crowds from around the world. You’ll also drive past the site of the Savoy Ballroom where Benny Goodman and Chick Webb fought it out during their ‘Battle of the Bands’, and where the ‘Charleston,’ ‘Lindy Hop’ and the ‘Big Apple’ dances were firmly cemented into American culture. A short stop will be made at 125th Street to view the exterior of the world famous Apollo Theatre, where Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald once appeared. Today the theatre still boasts standing room only audiences.

    Afterwards, you’ll head to one of Harlem’s hottest jazz clubs, the ‘Cotton Club’ for the highlight of your evening. Enjoy a drink, as you get into the swing of things and listen to the sounds of a jazz or rhythm and blues band.

Here, you can enjoy some free time and purchase some lunch before taking a drive through the financial district.     After a brief drive to Battery Park, at the southern tip of Manhattan, you will board the ferry and take in the sites of New York Harbour including beautiful views of the city including Brooklyn and its famous bridge, Staten Island, New Jersey and the Manhattan skyline in the distance.

    Upon reaching Liberty Island, enjoy some time to walk around the base of this magnificent statue. There will also be a short time to visit the gift shop and enjoy some of the exterior exhibits. Your guide will provide detailed information about ‘Lady Liberty’, its completion in 1886 and her unique history.

    Re-boarding the ferry, you will continue on to Ellis Island, another National Historic Landmark. Ellis Island was the main immigration centre for the United States from 1892 until World War II. More than 12 million immigrants were processed at the island, and today over 40% of Americans can trace some part of their ancestry back to Ellis Island. You will have approximately 1½ hour to explore the museum on your own.

    A drive along the west side of Manhattan will take you the World Trade Centre area.     The museum houses a growing collection of images, audio and video tapes, personal effects and expressions of tribute and remembrance and recorded testimonies. Each exhibit offers a touching insight into the shocking events.

    Take a walk across the iconic Brooklyn Bridge that stretches across the East River, connecting Manhattan and Brooklyn.

    As you reach the end of the Brooklyn Bridge, your walk will continue to Fulton Landing, the historical site once known as Brookland Ferry and made famous during the Battle of Brooklyn. Enjoy a little free time to stroll around and perhaps purchase a refreshment, and to admire the picture perfect view of the skyline of the Big Apple.

    Afterwards, rejoin your bus for the return drive to Manhattan, passing by landmarks such as Times Square, the Financial District and the World Trade Centre, before returning to the pier.

The bridge walk lasts around 1¼ hours and covers a length of 1½ miles. There are around 25 steps to exit the bridge. The walk to Fulton Landing is around 10-15 minutes and is over hilly, paved and cobblestoned terrain. Flat, comfortable walking shoes are essential. The Brooklyn Bridge is undergoing a program of renovation which may cause some obstruction to views. This tour may, on occasions, have to operate from the Brooklyn side of the bridge.

    This excursion will operate by open top bus, boat and on foot. This tour is accompanied by a local guide. There is limited walking on this tour, however guests must be able to negotiate steps on to and off the bus and steps up to the top deck. A degree of agility is required when boarding the boat and there are steps to the upper deck. Guests should be prepared for a 30 minute wait (standing) to board the cruise boat. The South Street Seaport is still under renovation following the damage by Hurricane Sandy in 2015, which is still quite evident. Refreshments are available for purchase on the boat if required.
