Indian Ocean
The Indian Ocean is home to some of the most beautiful and luxurious destinations in the world, including Mauritius and the Seychelles. Sailing these waters, you can explore a new and exciting place every day.
For nature lovers, the Black River Gorges National Park is the biggest and most well-known national park in Mauritius, and covers roughly 2% of the island’s surface. It is a dense jungle of rolling hills and valleys, and is incredibly important for the native wildlife of Mauritius. A trip to Mauritius also means you will have the opportunity to relax and unwind under the sun on some of the world’s prettiest beaches. But if you are feeling more adventurous, there are also experiences such as safari trips that are available to you while in Mauritius.
Whilst in the Seychelles you can visit the world’s smallest capital, Port Victoria. Here, you can explore the National Museum and stroll through the beautiful Botanical Gardens that are filled with tropical fauna and flora.
As the third largest ocean in the world, the Indian Ocean has a rich and fascinating history, defined by maritime trade. It is thought that commercial activity in the Indian Ocean dates back around seven thousand years. The world’s earliest civilisations such as Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt and the Indian Subcontinent all started around the Indian Ocean.
The culture of the various destinations and islands in the Indian Ocean blends elements from a number of different cultures and histories. People here are friendly and welcoming, and the generally favourable weather means that an outdoors lifestyle is common. Indian Ocean island culture still shows signs of French and some British influence.
In the Indian Ocean region, the typical cuisine is a result of a mix of diverse cultures coming together. Indian, African and French all combine to create a unique fusion, with classic dishes to try on your Indian Ocean cruise including fragrant curries and rich fish stews.
