We have several favourite cruise-bys, and some itineraries are richer for scenic cruising than others. Alaska, Norway and New Zealand all offer stunning scenic cruising, with national parks and inlets and bays. Transiting the Panama and Suez Canals are also unique experiences, and are often a bucket-list item for many maritime enthusiasts.

What are the best sights on a scenic cruise?

A scenic cruise is one with more noteable sights to spot from on deck, as opposed to itineraries with port calls for on-shore exploration. Almost every cruise itinerary offers scenic cruising in some measure, but some destinations, such as Norway or Alaska, are particularly rich in scenery for you to view while on board. Look out for 'cruise-by' ports in your itinerary for any places of note.

 What is a scenic cruise?

This will depend a lot on your itinerary: a trip through the Panama Canal for example will be much warmer than an Alaska itinerary! If you plan to spend lots of time on deck watching the sights, layers and waterproofs are recommended for most destinations, and especially for cruises during the colder months. Wrap up warm in winter, and protect yourself from the summer sun with sunscreen and hat. Sunglasses (and binoculars) are a wise addition all year round, as you scan the skies and clifftops for wildlife, lighthouses and medieval castles. Lastly, a Cunard cruise wouldn't be complete without a Gala Evening or two, so bring your best dress or suit and be ready to dance the night away.

A full transit of the Panama Canal lets you see this incredible waterway in the best possible way. Pass through the locks at either side of Gatun Lake and slowly rise to - and drop from - 26 meters above sea level, in an incredible feat of engineering.

The Northern Lights season in Alaska tends to fall between September-April, outside of peak cruise times, when evenings are at their darkest. Even then you're unlikely to spot the light show on an Alaska cruise as most itineraries focus on Southern Alaska and the areas around the Inside Passage, while the Northern Lights are typically only visible in the most northerly parts of Alaska and only for a handful of nights per year. Can I see the Northern Lights on an Alaska cruise?

Alaska is a cruise destination like no other, with so much to be appreciated both on shore and from the deck of your ship. Most Alaska cruise itineraries will voyage along the Inside Passage, which offers the chance to traverse piercing blue fjords, icy glaciers and snow-peaked mountains. Hubbard Glacier is another must-see on an Alaska cruise, as is the UNESCO biosphere reserve of Glacier Bay National Park. Plus, there's always the added possibility of spotting whales from your ship as you sail in Alaska, too.

What are the best places to visit in Alaska

Your suitcase will look quite different depending on where on the continent you visit. Cruises to Central America or the Caribbean often include some USA port calls, such as San Francisco, Fort Lauderdale or New York City. For these, pack layers so you can adjust to the warmer climate, and when it cools on sailing north. Particularly if you sail to New York City, make sure you have one or two warmer jumpers and a coat for when the evenings chill. Seeing the sights on shore is a fantastic experience, so make sure you pack comfortable shoes you can walk long distances in.
If you are cruising New England or Canada, warmer clothes are a must. Bring jumpers, a coat, hat and gloves and warm trousers for the cooler temperatures on deck, and for your on shore experiences. As with all Cunard cruises, don't forget swimwear and formalwear: our pools and spa await, and our Gala Evenings are not to be missed.

What do I pack for a USA and Canada cruise?

Daytime temperatures in the Inside Passage during Alaska cruise season reach average highs of between 12 and 18 degrees Celsius (55 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit) in June, July and August, with May and September up to 10 degrees cooler. There can be cloud cover and unexpected rainfall, although wind speeds tend to stay low. Mornings and evenings can feel extremely chilly, but afternoons generally warmer.Layers are essential to pack for an Alaska cruise, as are comfortable shoes and wet weather gear, such as a light rain mac. A more substantial coat is also recommended, particularly if you plan to stargaze from deck in the evenings or get up early to see the sunrise.

What Seattle hotel packages do you offer for Alaska cruises?

An Alaskan cruise requires a good mix of warm, waterproof and practical outdoor clothing, coupled with a selection of eveningwear outfits to wear on board and swimwear if you're planning to make use of your ship's pools and spa. Bring base layers and sensible walking shoes with a sturdy grip, as well as gloves, a hat and scarf, and a jacket capable of keeping you warm and dry. Long sleeves and trousers are advised for daytimes, particularly if you're planning to observe the scenery from deck as you sail the Inside Passage and Glacier Bay. A camera is also an Alaskan cruise essential as the landscape here is truly otherworldly.

What should I pack for an Alaska cruise?

We recommend that all travellers (U.S. citizens included) carry a valid passport for an Alaskan cruise. You’ll need this if your cruise includes an inbound or outbound flight via Canada. Your passport will need to have at least one blank page and a minimum of three months’ validity remaining.
Visa requirements vary from country to country. Those with U.S residency, including green cards, will need an ETA if transiting through a Canadian airport to meet their ship. Citizens of countries eligible for the U.S. Visa Waiver Program will need to apply for an ESTA visa online in advance of travel, and/or an ETA if flying into or out of Canada.&nbsp;Residents of all other countries will need to source appropriate tourist visas for the U.S. and Canada.
We recommend that all guests check their visa requirements in advance of travel to ensure possession of the correct travel documents as per the latest legislation.
