The Norwegian Fjords.
A Fjords voyage is to venture into another land. Dreamlike and otherworldly, this is the terrain where Vikings once roamed. A land of folklore and legend, unchanged by time. Where wild waterfalls cascade down moss covered cliffs and luminous lakes shine a radiant shade of blue.
To the source.
The word 'fjord' comes from the Old Norse fjǫrthr and refers to a long stretch of sea between high cliffs. They are formed when glaciers cut into the earth by gradually wearing away the rock, leaving a deep, U-shaped valley that is then flooded by the ocean.
Mild and wild.
Despite their latitude, Norway's fjords have a mild climate due to the Gulf Stream. The waters are rich with fish, porpoises and seals due to the lack of ice. Waterfalls are an impressive feature, and from Pulpit Rock you can see over the Lysefjord from over 600 meters above.
Sognefjord was a favorite trading route of the Vikings and is the deepest and longest fjord in Norway, whereas its branch, Nærøyfjord, is the narrowest at 820 feet. One of the most popular fjords is Geirangerfjord: its impressive overhang Dalsnibba dangles 4,600 feet above sea level.
