Caribbean
A cruise to the Caribbean is arguably the best way to explore the dusting of islands that lie to the south of Florida. The reason is simple. While they are collectively known for their sandy beaches and enviable weather, each island has its own distinct character, so to visit and contrast several on one holiday is a rewarding experience indeed.
Snorkelling clear waters, basking on powder-soft sands and visiting lush waterfalls are often what attracts visitors, although certain experiences feel extra special. Like a helicopter ride around St Lucia’s Pitons. A visit to historic Nelson’s Dockyard in Antigua. A stroll past Willemstad’s colourful Dutch inspired gabled houses. Even feeding stingrays in the shallows of Grand Cayman.
The Caribbean’s story is a chequered tale of colonists, pirates, slavery and great sugar wealth. Many islands changed hands several times over the centuries, creating a diversity of European influences which remains most evident in the buildings. Around this, the people of the Caribbean have stamped their own laid-back attitude onto each island.
As each island’s history is different, so too are the customs, the languages and the music you’ll find. All the islands of the Caribbean do have some things in common though – a relaxed attitude that perfectly matches the balmy weather. Throughout the islands of your Caribbean cruise you’ll also find a kinship with nature – locals fish for their supper and weekends see families flock to the stunning beaches to swim in the crystal-clear waters.
Caribbean food is as exciting as the islands that inspired it. From Cunard’s Caribbean cruises, you’ll find recipes using bold spices, sweet tropical fruits and fresh produce. The Caribbean is also home to delicious drinks – from freshly prepared juices to a wide selection of locally produced rums.
