The Coronation of the King and Queen
As we join the nation in celebrating the historic coronation of King Charles III, we are immensely proud to be able to reflect on some of the significant moments that we have shared with the royal family, dating back to August 1861 when Prince Alfred sailed from Halifax to Liverpool on Cunard’s SS Arabia.
Our ships have been a preferred mode of luxury transport for the British monarchy for decades. The first visit aboard a Cunard Queen by a reigning monarch took place in Liverpool in July 1913 when King George V and Queen Mary visited RMS Mauretania.
Fast-forward to 1968, and as a young Prince of Wales, King Charles III joined Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth 2 (QE2) as the ship sailed from her birthplace at Clydebank shipyard downriver to Greenock.

More recently, we are especially proud that members of the royal family have graced each of the ships in the fleet. In fact, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was godmother to Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 and Queen Elizabeth, whilst the Queen Consort is godmother to Queen Victoria.
