On Board Speakers

Colin McDowell, Credit to: Nick Knight
Colin McDowell MBE - Fashion Historian and Style Commentator

Colin McDowell has been in the fashion business for over 30 years. He learned the trade of fashion design as a designer at ready-to-wear and couture levels. He is the only fashion journalist who has been on the other side of the catwalk.

Colin McDowell understands the aesthetic of fashion design from first-hand knowledge and also the creative stress and strain that goes into a collection and fashion show.

In the early eighties, Colin lectured at St Martins School of Art in London, and had the privilege of teaching John Galliano. He began to write for newspapers and soon had work published in all the quality titles, pre-eminently The Guardian. From there he moved to The Sunday Times to become its fashion writer, a role that continued with the introduction of Style, for which he still writes.

Colin McDowell travels widely giving lectures and contributing to seminars and conferences. He is a regular broadcaster on TV and radio as a writer and presenter of programmes as well as a 'talking head' about fashion and clothes, especially their sociological significance. Colin also has a regular column in the Business of Fashion (BoF).

A noted academic, Colin has published 23 books in fashion and style-related subjects. His latest books are Fashion Today and The Anatomy of Fashion: Why We Dress the Way We Do.

British Milliner Stephen Jones
Stephen Jones - British Milliner

Stephen Jones burst on to the London fashion scene during its explosion of street style in the late seventies. By day, he was a student at St Martins; after dark he was one of that era's uncompromising style-blazers at the legendary Blitz nightclub - always crowned with a striking hat of his own idiosyncratic design.

By 1980, Jones had opened his first millinery salon in the heart of London's Covent Garden. Those premises soon became a place of pilgrimage and patronage, as everyone from rock stars to royalty, from Boy George to Diana, Princess of Wales, identified Jones as the milliner who would help them make arresting headlines.

Now, as ever, at the forefront of fashion, his beguiling hats routinely grace the most celebrated magazine covers and enliven window displays of the world's most stylish stores. From runways to race-courses, from pop-promos to royal garden parties, millinery by Stephen Jones adds the exclamation mark to every fashion statement.

Stuart Weitzman - American shoe designer and entrepreneur

It can certainly be said that Stuart Weitzman’s passion for design has been a lifelong pursuit: he began working at his father’s Massachusetts shoe factory while still in college. After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, Weitzman applied himself to the industry with laser-like focus, eventually building the globally-renowned company that bears his name.

Today, his shoes dominate the red carpet events and are worn by loyal celebrity fans like Angelina Jolie, Taylor Swift, Haley Berry, Blake Lively, Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Selena Gomez, Jennifer Lawrence, Gigi Hadid, Princess Kate, Princess Meghan, and by millions of women who buy them in over 75 countries around the world.

Rosemarie Bravo
Rose Marie Bravo - Vice chair of Burberry

During Rose Marie Bravo's career, she has occupied leadership positions in several major fashion businesses and is now vice chair at Burberry, where she was CEO from 1997 to 2005.

Bravo graduated cum laude and joined Abraham and Strass' department store at Long Island as a buyer in 1971. In 1974, she was recruited by Macy's. When her company bought I. Magnin she continued to work there until the bankrupt of Macy's in 1992. After 5 more years as President and Chief Merchant of Saks Fifth Avenue, Burberry chose to appoint her as a chief executive. She initiated a radical reform of the British classic brand and improvements to the company structure. Her strategy included signing top model Kate Moss and recruiting the young fashion designer Christopher Bailey, who was working for Gucci at the time. The Burberry line of products was greatly increased and the newly-added perfumes especially contributed to the company's rising profits.

With Bravo as CEO, Burberry expanded greatly onto the US market, sales doubling from $470 million to $1 billion, earning her a reputation as being one of the top female business people.
