Temperatures in Africa and around the Indian Ocean tend to be on the higher side: though the region is large and weather can vary depending on where you cruise. Generally, the summer months are best avoided, and cruises tend to operate between September and May when days are cooler and crowds are smaller.

What ports do African and Indian Ocean cruises stop in?

The climate in Africa and around the Indian Ocean is warm, and sometimes humid. Light, breathable layers are key here: loose shirts and shorts/skirts are a good choice. Bear in mind that local cultures can be conservative, particularly in the Middle East and when visiting temples and other religious sites. Cover shoulders and legs above the knees, and avoid scoop-neck or low-cut tops. It might be wise to carry a loose scarf or shawl as well. Are child prices available for Shore Experiences? What are the age ranges?

Some of our ‘standard’ Shore Experiences aren’t suitable for everybody due to their physical nature. However, some wheelchair users and guests with reduced mobility might feel confident they can join in certain experiences. We also offer a selection of accessible Shore Experiences which are specially designed for guests with reduced mobility.
‘Standard’ shore experiences
We give you an idea of the physicality and types of terrain you’ll encounter on each shore experience within its description. However, we don’t recommend particular ‘standard’ experiences for wheelchair users or guests with reduced mobility because we understand that everyone has different abilities.
If your mobility is limited but you’re able to board a coach, the most suitable ‘standard’ shore experiences for you will likely be those with the 'low' activity symbol. These are often titled 'Panoramic', e.g. Panoramic Rome.
Wheelchair and scooter users have the same options as all our other guests:

<li>Go on shore independently.</li>
<li>Take a taxi (the shore experiences team on board can help arrange this).</li>
<li>Join a shore experience. However, we recommend that you consider the amount and type of movement involved, which is indicated in each shore experience’s description.</li>
<li>Arrange a private, personalised experience (the shore experiences team on board can help arrange this).</li>
</ul>
Transport on ‘standard’ shore experiences
The mode of transport used for each experience is noted in the tour description on My Cunard.
The experiences we offer involve a variety of transportation types (e.g. coach, minibus, boat etc.) which vary in size and age from port to port. Each has different accessibility and storage facilities.
Generally, full-size coaches can accommodate a limited number of small, collapsible scooters or manual wheelchairs in the hold. Guests or their companions have the responsibility for collapsing wheelchairs/scooters and placing them on the coach. If this isn’t possible, the wheelchair/scooter would need to stay on the ship as there are no storage facilities at the quayside.
Where minibuses/trolley trains are used to operate shore experiences, the storage space is too small to accommodate wheelchairs or scooters.
Accessible shore experiences and vehicles
Due to health and safety reasons, mobility scooters can’t be used on our accessible shore experiences as they can’t be safely secured inside the vehicles. If you’re a full-time scooter user or if you’d like an alternative option, we can arrange private shore experiences. Please&nbsp;speak with the shore experiences&nbsp;team on board for more personalised/ bespoke arrangements.
You can take an electric wheelchair on some accessible shore experiences. However, weight requirements do vary by tour. This information is detailed in the 'Essential Information' section of each individual tour.&nbsp;It’s advisable, where possible, to take a manual wheelchair instead as they’re always suited to the accessible vehicles.
Please also note that legal requirements for wheelchairs and travel within vehicles differ by country. Please ensure you check the 'Essential Information' for each individual tour to understand what is specifically required before you book your experience.
Accessible shore experiences are charged to your on-board account. If you’re entitled to receive a loyalty discount, it will be applied.
If you use a wheelchair or scooter part-time, we recommend you join a ‘standard’ shore experience and store your wheelchair/scooter in the hold of the coach or vehicle (providing it collapses).
Wheelchair accessible minibuses are only available in a few ports and can only accept full-time manual wheelchair users for safety reasons.
All the accessible vehicles we use and tours that are arranged locally are sourced from reputable and competent operators. They’re fully insured, have safety management systems in place and comply with all prevailing local rules, regulations and standards. The health, safety and comfort of our guests is paramount. However please be mindful that local country standards may not reflect those at home.
Written commentary for deaf/hard of hearing guests
If you let us know prior to sailing that you’d like written commentary of a shore experience, we’ll work with the tour agent and do our best to provide this for you. Please <a href="/contact-us" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">contact us</a> as soon as possible to request this.

Are Shore Experiences accessible for people with disabilities?

Our Shore Experiences are open to everyone travelling on the voyage, and we offer a full range of itineraries and activity types, for all levels. Some Shore Experiences may have restrictions, such as age or mobility, but this information will be included in the Shore Experience important information, on My Cunard.

Are there any limitations on who can join a Shore Experience?

Any restrictions would be on an experience-by-experience basis, and these can be found in the Shore Experience important information, on My Cunard.

Are there any restrictions for Shore Experiences?

We always recommend booking your Shore Experiences early, to avoid disappointment. However, if a Shore Experience is sold out, we would encourage you to explore the other options available in the wide range of Shore Experiences featured on My Cunard.

Can I book a Shore Experience that is ‘Sold Out’? Are waitlists available?

Once on board, if you wish to cancel your shore experiences before the cancellation deadline (generally 48 hours prior to the arrival in port), a 10% cancellation fee will be applied to your onboard account, and the full amount paid will be refunded to your original credit / debit card. Can I cancel my Shore Experience when I am on board the ship?

We don’t recommend this due to time constraints and the potential it has to affect your onward travel arrangements.You might notice on My Cunard that shore experiences are offered in destinations where the ship stays overnight or for multiple full days. These experiences are offered to guests who booked the longer holiday when a choice of durations was available.If you decide to join a shore experience on your embarkation or disembarkation day, we strongly advise you ensure that the timings don’t clash with your travel arrangements.Some experiences that take place on disembarkation days include a transfer to the airport. However, you should still ensure this gives you plenty of time to check in for your flight. If in doubt, check with the shore experience team on board.If you’d like to arrange a private tour for the final day of your holiday, it may be possible to organise it on board (with a taxi to your chosen destination). However, we recommend that you familiarise yourself with the process of taking luggage off the ship.

Can I join a Shore Experience on my embarkation or disembarkation day?

If you have any special requirements for your Shore Experiences, please speak to the Shore Experiences team on board.

Can I make any special arrangements for my Shore Experience e.g. dietary?

All Shore Experiences booked in My Cunard must be paid for at the time of booking. You can do this with a valid credit or debit card. You can also book Shore Experiences on board, and these will be charged to your on-board account, which you’ll be asked to settle at the end of your holiday.Please keep in mind that your preferred Shore Experiences may no longer be available once you board, and that the cost will be at least 10% higher than if you book in advance through My Cunard*.You can browse and book Shore Experiences here in My Cunard up until three days before you set sail on your holiday.*Savings are when compared to the on-board price and apply to selected Shore Experiences in My Cunard up until three days before the cruise departure date. Can I pay for Shore Experiences with my on board spending money?

Before booking any activity Shore Experience we strongly recommend that you ensure your travel insurance extends to cover the specified activity. It is your responsibility to obtain adequate insurance.

Do I need travel insurance for my Shore Experience?

You can make amendments or cancel a booking on My Cunard.Visit the My Orders page to cancel or remove someone from a booking. To amend the time of a shore experience or to add people to a booking, you’ll need to cancel and rebook for the new time and/or correct number of people.You may cancel or amend most reserved experiences at no cost online through My Cunard or by calling our customer contact centre up to 3 days before sailing. There may, however, be shore experiences that are non-refundable, incur a cancellation penalty, or have an earlier cancellation deadline; details will be included in the tour description.If you need to cancel within 3 days of your holiday departure date, please speak to the Shore Experiences team once you’re on board. Cancellations cannot be made via My Cunard at this stage.Once on board, if you need to cancel your Shore Experiences before the cancellation deadline (generally 48 hours before the ship’s arrival in the relevant port), a 10% cancellation fee will be applied to your on-board account and the full amount paid will be refunded to your original credit/debit card. How do I amend or cancel my Shore Experience booking?

You may book as many as you like – however we recommend allowing 1 hour between departures. If you miss a Shore Experience due to a delay on the previous experience, you will receive a full refund.

How many Shore Experiences can I book in one day?

Before sailing, we’re unable to confirm any specific dietary arrangements for Shore Experiences. Once on board, if you contact the shore experiences team and let them know your needs, they’ll speak to the tour operator to see if it’s possible to cater for you.

If I’m joining a Shore Experience that includes a meal, can you make specific dietary arrangements? 

In the unusual event that we need to cancel a Shore Experience for operational reasons, we will notify you as soon as possible to give you an opportunity to book an alternative and automatically process a full refund. View full terms and conditions above.

If my Shore Experience is cancelled, what do I need to do?

If you want to join a shore experience as a group, you can do so by booking on My Cunard. All guests with different booking references will need to book separately. Guests wishing to travel together should all meet for the experience together as this will help the Shore Experiences team allocate places in the same vehicle. We also recommend speaking to the onboard shore experience team in advance to let them know you’d like to travel as a group.

I’m travelling with friends and family, can we all travel together?

Accessible Shore Experiences are available in a wide range of incredible destinations, and will begin with the word ‘accessible’. Like any other shore experience, they are available to book up to 365 days before departure.If you have reduced mobility or use a walking aid but are not a wheelchair user, please note that a range of leisurely Shore Experiences are also available. These offer a slower, more relaxed pace; to find them, simply use the ‘low activity’ search filter when browsing shore experiences. The various activity levels for every individual shore experience are also stated in ‘Important information’.

What about accessible Shore Experiences?

Depending on when and where you sail with us, it may be necessary for you to join one of our organised and vetted Shore Experiences when exploring ashore. This will help us protect the health and safety of all our guests and crew, as well as the communities we visit, by allowing us to keep in line with the approved health protocols around Covid-19. In addition, all of our operators are vetted and subject to regular testing and ongoing guidance.

What are my options for independent exploration?

Different parts of the world may have different requirements for disembarking the ship, whether you are on your own or on a booked Shore Experience.
During your voyage it is your responsibility to meet all the entry requirements for that country at the time of sailing. Please check the government website of the country you are travelling to and ensure you are aware of the most up-to-date country requirements, as we can’t accept responsibility if you are denied entry to a country because you don’t meet the entry requirements.

What are the current requirements at each port for going ashore?

You may cancel or amend most reserved experiences at no cost online through My Cunard or by calling Reservations up to 3 days before sailing. There may, however, be shore experiences that are non-refundable, incur a cancellation penalty, or have an earlier cancellation deadline; details will be included in the tour description.See full T&amp;Cs above.

What is the refund policy?

Standards of transport vary considerably throughout the world. Air-conditioned coaches are not available in some countries, whilst in others local buses are the best that can be provided. Please also bear in mind that cars, taxis or mini-buses may also be used at some ports where coaches are not available, or are limited. Guests are asked to take care when boarding and disembarking vehicles particularly bearing in mind that some vehicles have high steps.

What transport is used for my Shore Experiences?

Our Shore Experiences are booked on a first-come, first-served basis, and availability can be limited. We recommend booking early to secure a place on the experiences you want to join. You can book and pay via My Cunard up to four days before your holiday departure date.
