2006年に父親が急死したとき、サラ・アウテンはオーストラリアからモーリシャスまで、インド洋をボートで単独横断することで悲しみに向き合うことを決意しました。2009年のこの4か月間の横断が、次の旅「London2London: Via the World（ロンドンからロンドンへ、世界を経由して）」のきっかけとなったのです。
2011年から2015年にかけて、ボート、自転車、カヤックで北半球を一周しました。海を渡り、砂漠を越え、山脈を越え、地球を一周し、見知らぬ人々の優しさに触れ、旅をする人生の喜び、精神的、そして肉体的にも多くの挑戦や葛藤に直面しました。そして、自身の旅を綴った本、『A Dip in the Ocean（ディップ・イン・ザ・オーシャン）』と『Dare to Do（デア・トゥ・ドゥ）』の2冊を出版し、監督のジェン・ランドールと共に受賞歴のある長編映画『Home（ホーム）』を制作しました。
現在は4頭のロバたちとともにセラピストとして働いており、これもまた一種の冒険だと考えているそうです。
