Ian Ridpath is an internationally renowned writer and lecturer on astronomy and space. He is editor of the authoritative Oxford Dictionary of Astronomy and author of a widely used series of stargazing guides for beginners including The Monthly Sky Guide.
Ian has been a member of the Royal Astronomical Society’s team of Insights speakers on Cunard since 2008 and has been leading groups to see the northern lights in Norway since 2010. Ian says: “There is a virtually permanent ring of auroral activity around the Earth’s poles called the auroral oval which passes overhead in Tromsø and Narvik. Hence you have a very good chance of seeing the Northern Lights over much of your voyage, if the sky is clear."
Ian is a winner of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific’s award for outstanding contributions to the public understanding and appreciation of astronomy, previous recipients of which include Carl Sagan and Patrick Moore.
