British writer Bernardine Evaristo was the joint winner of the Booker Prize 2019 with her eighth book, Girl, Woman, Other, making her the first black woman to win the prize in its 51-year history. It was also a Barack Obama ‘Top 19 Book of 2019’ and a Sunday Times bestseller for 44 weeks, holding the top spot for paperback fiction for five weeks. It has now been translated into over forty langauges. Her writing also spans short fiction, reviews, essays, drama, and BBC radio writing. The recipient of many awards and honours, she received an OBE in 2020. She has founded several successful arts inclusion projects including the Brunel International African Poetry Prize.
