Visit one the French Riviera’s oldest medieval towns, Saint Paul de Vence, long known as a haven for the famous. After a coastal drive, the 16th-century town appears from the rolling hills and rich valleys of the Vence countryside. A typical example of the fortified towns which once guarded the Var frontier, it was “discovered” in the 1920s by painters such as Signac, Modigliani, Bonnard and Soutine. After a guided walking tour and some free time, perhaps visit the Foundation Maeght, a museum outside the walled village which houses some of Europe’s finest modern art.
