Visit an active volcano and uncover the abundant natural resources that heat and power Iceland.
Enjoy a fascinating stroll around the numerous steam vents and fumaroles surrounding the active Hengill Volcano. Although it last erupted 2,000 years ago, Hengill still produces impressive amounts of hydro and geothermal power that is harnessed for hot water and electricity. Then at the Hellisheidi Geothermal Plant, you’ll learn about geosciences and geothermal technology.
In Hveragerði, you’ll take a short walk around the local geothermal area and sample fresh bread, traditionally baked underground by the hot springs. At Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO Site, you’ll literally travel from one continent to another, as you cross the neo-volcanic rift zone that slices through Iceland.
After passing Thingvallavatn, Iceland’s largest natural lake, you’ll stop at a viewpoint filled with countless hot springs spraying sulphur-rich deposits over the amazing scenery.
