Start by visiting the northernmost producer of Scotch whisky, Highland Park Distillery, for an exclusive tour, a brief film and a tasting. Take a scenic drive along Scapa Flow, the chief base of the British fleet in both World Wars, listen to wartime stories and cross the first of the Churchill Barriers, a causeways built to protect the eastern approaches. On the islet of Lamb Holm, visit the hand-painted Italian Chapel, built by Italian prisoners during WWII and preserved as a symbol of peace. Return to Kirkwall for free time to explore its sights, such as 12th century St Magnus Cathedral.
