Start by visiting the northernmost producer of Scotch whisky, Highland Park Distillery, for an exclusive tour, a brief film and a tasting. Take a scenic drive along Scapa Flow, the chief base of the British fleet in both World Wars, listen to wartime stories and cross the first of the Churchill Barriers, causeways built to protect the eastern approaches. On the islet of Lamb Holm, visit the hand-painted Italian Chapel, built by Italian prisoners during WWII and preserved as a symbol of peace. Return to Kirkwall for free time to explore its sights, such as 12th century St Magnus Cathedral.
