Situated just an hour away from Doha is the hamlet of Al Shahaniya, home to the Sheikh Faisal Museum and Qatar’s most notable camel race track.

The Sheikh Faisal Museum is said to be one of the largest private museums in the world. Its distinctive exterior is built of local stone and designed to preserve and showcase the extraordinary artefacts collected by Sheikh Faisal. Inside the museum, you’ll discover the history of the Qatari people and will have the opportunity to admire an array of collections spanning from the Jurassic age to the early Islamic period and up to the present day.

Just a short drive away from the museum is the Camel Race Track, where you’ll gain an insight into camel racing. Professional camel racing began in Qatar in 1972 and is a cultural and popular pastime for many of the Qatari people. Intriguingly the racing is undertaken by robot jockeys, which are remotely controlled by operators driven alongside the track.
