Discover the beautiful landscape and rich history of an abandoned village reclaimed by nature.
Sit back and soak up the spectacular scenery as a short boat ride takes you across Jökulfirðir (the glacier fjord), with its rugged snow-topped mountains and quiet, secluded coves.
In the late 1940s the people of Hesteyri village, for some unknown reason, decided to move away, and by 1952 the village was abandoned. Since that time the native flora and fauna have flourished and taken over, with Arctic Foxes and nesting birds now calling the village home. You may even spot the seals lazing on the nearby rocks.
Soak up the scenery as wander through this unspoilt area and admire the old whaling station ruins, while your local guide brings life to this once-thriving outpost. Then enjoy tea or coffee, and traditional Icelandic pastries in the former doctor's residence, before returning to Isafjordur.
