Savour a cocktail of beautiful scenery, cascading waterfalls, lava formations, and bubbling mud pools.
At the impressive Goðafoss, the Waterfall of the Gods, you’ll get wonderful views of this voluminous cascade, which stands almost 40 feet high. The falls earned its name when chieftain Thorgeir threw the pagan gods into the falls during Iceland’s conversion to Christianity in 1,000 AD.
Continuing to the Lake Myvatn geothermal area you’ll witness the fascinating pseudocraters at Skutustadir, as well as Iceland’s 4th largest lake, Lake Mývatn, whose irregular shape was formed by multiple lava flows.
Then marvel at the Dimmuborgir lava labyrinth, or the Black Fortress. This dramatic expanse of rugged crags, which hosts peculiar lava formations in columns and arches, is steeped in folklore.
Your final stop is the Námaskarð thermal field, a barren land filled with countless hot springs, fumaroles, and gurgling purple and yellow sulphur cauldrons.
