Visit the ancient walled town of Requena, explore its intriguing cave network and sample some of Spain’s finest Cava.
Soak up the splendid scenery as you journey through the rural countryside and into the mountainous region of Las Cabrillas. At the atmospheric walled town of Requena, which was once a Moorish fortress, you’ll find an ancient citadel, a wealth of medieval architecture and an intriguing cave system.
You’ll begin with a leisurely walk through the cobblestoned lanes of the old town quarter of La Vila. Then you’ll descend into one of the oldest caves in the region, which is part of a network created during the Muslim period, between the 9th and 13th centuries. This fascinating underground maze had many uses over the centuries, including a granary store, war-time shelter, wine cellar, and even a cemetery.
At a local wine cellar, you’ll learn all about the local wine and Cava production, and its cultural influence on the area. Then you’ll have an opportunity to sample a selection of delicious wines and Cava, accompanied by Spanish chorizo and ham.
