    Capture the true spirit of Rome as you explore some of the city's landmarks and highlights.

    Your journey from Civitavecchia takes you along the highway, through the city and into the heart of Rome.

    Upon arrival, you will visit one of the grandest of all Rome's monuments, the Colosseum. Once inside, it is easy to imagine the magnificence of ancient Rome. From one of the great viewpoints, you will see this enormous arena that once featured 76 numbered entrances, marble seats and subterranean passages where animals and other apparatus were hidden from view.

    A short stroll from the Colosseum leads you to the Roman Forum (exterior view). See remains of the Senate buildings, where decisions affecting the entire Roman Empire took place. Your guided walk will continue through Venice Square and on to the Trevi Fountain. Join the romantic custom of tossing a coin into Rome's most famous fountain to ensure that some day you will return.

    To round off your tour, you will head to the Pantheon for an exterior view of the immense columns and awe-inspiring hemispherical dome. Afterwards, free time will be given for you to enjoy the charming Piazza Navona and browse the shops and boutiques.

    An Italian-style luncheon will be served to allow you to 'refuel' during your tour.

Flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Please dress appropriately for entering churches.The itinerary is subject to local conditions. For safety reasons, a maximum number of visitors is allowed inside the Colosseum at one time and as a consequence of this new rule also the access of groups with reservation may be stopped and delayed. For security reasons there is a metal detector check before entering the Colosseum. It is strictly forbidden to enter the colosseum with backpacks, suitcases, trolleys and large bags.     You will be transferred from the pier by shuttle, for a 5 minute ride to the train station of the port of Civitavecchia, where you will be directed to your carriage.

    Sit back and relax, as you take the hour long train ride to St Peter’s Station. During your journey the local hostess will provide a map and offer some handy tips on how to make the most of your time in Rome. Upon arrival, your hostess will direct you to St Peter’s Square, where you will begin your independent exploration.

    Perhaps head to St Peter’s Basilica or venture further afield and discover as many of Rome’s treasures as your pace allows.

    At a time specified by your escort, meet and enjoy the return journey to Civitavecchia by coach.


    This excursion will operate by coach and train. This tour may be operated in reverse order and is unguided, exclusive of lunch and entrance fees. City maps will be provided on the train or coach and local transportation in Rome is readily available. Please remember to take Euros; major credit cards and debit cards are also accepted for purchases. The walk from the train station to St Peter’s Square is approximately 15 minutes and the walk from the meeting point to the coach stop is 10 minutes. Please take note of the pick-up time and allow plenty of time to reach the train station or the coach stop for the return journey. Both the train and the coach cannot be held for latecomers.     Upon arrival in Rome you will visit the Catacombs, a curious underground maze of tunnels where the early Christians, persecuted by the Romans, practiced their religion in secret. In the Roman Hills lies a wealth of beautiful countryside.

    You will follow the Appian Way, which runs along one of the first ancient Roman military roads into the campagna (countryside) dotted with farmhouses, villas and palaces.

    In Rome’s wine-growing hinterland, you will stop at the Monte Due Torri farmhouse, which is located in the Albani Hills. A member of the household will greet you and will lead you on a tour of the property. Upon entering the home you will be invited to assist in the preparation of the meal. Enjoy a lunch of local products; homemade bread, wine, fresh mixed salad, pasta and a dessert.

The visit to the Catacombs is led by a Vatican guide and you may be asked to join another group not connected to P&O cruises. Flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended.     This excursion operates by coach and on foot. There is a 10-15 minute walk from the coach parking area, through Bracciano town, to the castle.     Explore the magnificent ancient city of Ostia Antica and admire the beautifully preserved Roman ruins.

    Ostia Antica

    Founded by King Anco Marzio around the 4th century BC, Ostia Antica was Rome’s main commercial port and military base, with a population at its peak of nearly 100,000 inhabitants. Barbarian invasions and malaria led to the decline of city and eventually all the inhabitants abandoned it. Buried for centuries by sand, the city is remarkably well-preserved and, although maybe less spectacular than Pompeii or Herculaneum, it gives a more complete picture of the life in the Roman Empire.

    Your visit starts at Via delle Tombe, which leads to the Porta Romana - one of the city’s 3 gates. This is the beginning of Decumanus Maximus, the main road through the town. From the Neptune and Amphitride Baths, you’ll walk to the theatre built by Agrippa and to the Forum, which once formed the centre of the city. Discover the main public buildings - the Capitolium and the Temple of Rome and Augustus.

    There are no fewer than 18 temples dedicated to the Persian God Mithras, as well as a Jewish Synagogue dating from the 1st century BC and a Christian basilica. See the House of Diana and the Termopolium, an ancient Roman bar, with a marble counter and a fresco representing the fruits and foodstuffs that were sold there. After this fascinating stroll through the past, re-board your coach to return to Civitavecchia.

    As you drive around Italy's legendary capital, you will be intrigued by the stunning picture of its past and present, by the tranquil fountains that adorn the squares and streets, and by the sculptures and frescoes that cover every church.

    Once in the city you take a panoramic sightseeing tour passing by the Vatican walls, which outline the area of the Vatican City, the Lungotevere and the Ara Pacis.

    Next, you will pass by Muro Torto (the Roman walls), Villa Borghese and enter the old town by Porta Pinciana. Pass through Via Vittorio Veneto, symbol of the Italian ‘dolce vita’, the white marble Victor Emmanuel Momument, the Roman Forum, the Colosseum, the Arch of Constantine and the Circus Maximus.

    A brief stop will be made for you to photograph a building of epic proportions, The Colosseum; an image that will no doubt become a precious memento of your visit to the eternal city of Rome.

    Continue on to the exceptional Villa Adriana, built by the Emperor Hadrian who closely followed the projects in every detail. Inside the villa, there are monumental buildings, streets, ponds, thermal springs, libraries and theatres which had impressed and inspired the Emperor during his numerous journeys throughout the provinces of the empire.

    The Emperor’s thirst for knowledge from far away places served to shape the structure of the Roman Empire and enriched it with many different cultures.     This is your chance to get a fascinating behind-the-scenes private tour of the Vatican and see areas otherwise not open to the public. Home to Roman Catholic Popes for many centuries, the Vatican City is in fact a city-state surrounded on all sides by Rome. It houses some of the most iconic art treasures in the world, including the famed ancient Roman sculpture, 'Laocoön and His Sons' as well as Italian renaissance frescoes in the Raphael Rooms and the Sistine Chapel, with Michelangelo’s famous painted ceiling.

    Your tour guide will walk you through the pristine Vatican Gardens, a place of tranquility and meditation for the Popes since 1279. You’ll then see inside the house of Pope Emerito Ratzinger (the previous Pope Pope Benedict XVI who retired whilst in office). Then, the magnificent Fountain dell’Acquilone within the gardens. You’ll then see a piece of the original Berlin Wall, donated to the Vatican when it was dismantled in 1989. The Vatican even has its own radio station, which you’ll get to see, as well as the Vatican Train Station, the Academy of Science, and Casina di Pio IV (the former summer palace of the Popes).

    Then, the unforgettable Sistine Chapel where you’ll marvel at the masterpieces of Michelangelo, including his frescoes of the ‘Creation’ on the ceiling and the ‘Last Judgment’ on the altar wall. Finally, St Peter’s Basilica, by far the largest church in the world.

    Later, after lunch and free exploration, before leaving the Eternal City, a panoramic drive will show you Rome's renowned landmarks, including Circus Maximus, Venice Square and the Colosseum, where you’ll have the opportunity to stop for a photograph before returning to the ship with a lifetime of memories in tow.

    The Vatican Museum houses one of the most impressive collections in the world. Admire the many works of art and visit the Sistine Chapel, dominated by the efforts of Michelangelo. The conception and execution of 'Creation of the World' and 'Last Judgment' are positively titanic.

    Magnificent St Peter's Basilica took over 100 years to build and features Renaissance and Baroque stylings. Resting on over 800 pillars and adorned with 44 altars, St Peter's is by far the largest church in the world.

    There will be an opportunity to 'refuel' during your tour, with an Italian-style luncheon.


    This excursion will operate by coach and on foot. Guests booking this tour will have privileged access to the Vatican Museum, avoiding the main bulk of the crowds and queues for entrance. This is a fast paced comprehensive tour with substantial walking and lots of steps. Please dress appropriately for entering churches. For security reasons, St Peter's may close entrance altogether.
