Port Victoria cruises

Port Victoria has a friendly, small-town feel and provides an interesting contrast to the many paradise-like beaches in the Seychelles.

Things to do on your Port Victoria cruise

Despite its relatively small size (It is one of the smallest capitals in the world), Port Victoria has a lot to offer when it comes to shopping, parks and religious sites. It is best explored on foot, and a day is plenty to experience the best of what Victoria has to offer.

Start with a visit to the compact indoor market, a multi-sensory experience you will not want to miss. Treat your eyes to the kaleidoscope of produce on display, from the luminescent scales of parrot fish to the burnt reds and oranges of local spices. Let the cacophony of aromas surround you. Listen as the locals shout and haggle while you pick up a souvenir or two. Saturdays are the best time to visit the markets but they have a vibrant buzz every day of the week.

Visit the Botanical Gardens on your Port Victoria cruise. Well-kept and only ten minutes’ walk from the centre of Victoria, they are the perfect place to seek some temporary respite from the hustle and bustle of the town. While you are there, do not miss the monstrous leaves of the rare coco de mer plant, the aromatic spice grove and the pen of giant tortoises.

When you are ready to head back into the centre of Victoria, visit the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Simultaneously elegant and imposing, this cathedral is one of the first churches in the Seychelles. It is particularly distinctive due to its attractive façade, tabernacle and carved doors – which were fashioned by Seychellois sculptor Egbert Marday during the cathedral’s latest renovation in 1995.

Discover the history of Port Victoria

On your Port Victoria cruise, there is plenty to do and see to help you learn more about the history of this small yet perfectly formed city. For instance, the Clock Tower – the focal point of the city centre – is a downsized replica of the Vauxhall Bridge clock tower in London. It arrived in Victoria in 1903, when the Seychelles became a crown colony.

On your Victoria cruise, make time to check out the Old Courthouse, a fantastic example of Creole architecture right next to the clock tower. Many more old colonial buildings can be found along Francis Rachel Street and Albert Street.

To learn a little more about the history of the Seychelles in terms of its geology and nature, head to the Natural History Museum. Find out more about the unique flora and fauna as well as the environmental concerns of these incredible islands. Do not miss the top floor – It is dedicated to marine life.

Excursions

Please note: The shore excursions listed are typical for this port. The full programme of shore excursions available for your cruise will be displayed on Cruise Personaliser at least 12 weeks prior to departure.

  • Sail & Snorkel

Sail along the beautiful coastline of the Seychelles and take to the waters to discover a fascinating underwater world.

    Sail & Snorkel

You’ll board your catamaran at the pier and set sail towards Ste Anne Marine Park, for the opportunity to enjoy an unpolluted ecosystem, located only a short distance from the capital Victoria.

Upon arrival at Ste Anne Marine Park, the captain will drop anchor ready for your snorkelling experience. A safety briefing and instruction will be given before you don your snorkel gear and take to the inviting waters. Your guide will tempt the fish with some nibbles and you too can join in the fun of hand feeding them.

If you wish to get even closer to this underwater world, you can join the semi-submarine for a short underwater tour of this colorful world. You may also choose to cool off with a quick refreshing dip or head ashore and soak up the sun on the beach. Soft drink refreshments will be available on board throughout your tour.

Afterwards, relax and enjoy the coastal views once more as you sail back to the pier.

  • Cruise & Spice

Cruise along the coastline of Mahe and enjoy a visit to the Jardin du Roi spice plantation.

    Cruise & Spice

Board your catamaran at the pier and set sail for a leisurely cruise along the south eastern coastline of Mahe. Your Captain will choose the best place to drop anchor for your snorkelling stop, and here you can take to the water in search of marine life. Alternatively sit back and relax as you take in the spectacular coastal scenery of the Seychelles. Afterwards you’ll arrive at Anse Royale, where your cruising portion of the tour will end and you’ll be transferred by dinghy to the shore.

Enjoy a scenic drive into the Rainforest Valley and on to Jardin du Roi. Pierre Poivre, the famous Peter Pepper, chose Mahe island as an ideal location for growing spices, owing to its perfect latitude. The original site was burnt to the ground and lay dormant until 1860, when William Green created the Jardin du Roi you see today. As you stroll through the plantation, you’ll discover a variety of spice plants, tropical fruit trees and essential oil plants. After your visit, rejoin your bus for a scenic coastal drive back to Port Victoria.

During your tour soft drink refreshments will be served.
