Port Louis cruises

The beating heart of Mauritius can be found in Port Louis, its capital city. Combining a dazzling spectrum of cultures, languages and influences, Port Louis is a fascinating place to sit and watch the world go by.

As the most populous cultural, commercial and economic hub in Mauritius, Port Louis is a stark contrast to the white sandy beaches that encircle the island - its streets are bustling, loud and always lovably chaotic. Like the rest of Mauritius, the people are friendly and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming.

Things to do on your Port Louis cruise

There is plenty to keep you entertained in Port Louis. The lively atmosphere of this city is felt most strongly running through its streets, alleyways and markets. Check out the Central Market, the epicentre of the city’s economy since Victorian times. The market was renovated in 2004 and today is the perfect place to mingle among the locals, watch vendors haggle over local produce and find souvenirs.

Pick up the pace by heading to the second oldest racecourse in the world - the Champ de Mars Racecourse. This site has significance beyond sport too, as it is where Mauritian independence was declared in 1968.

If you are looking for somewhere to explore in the evening, the Le Caudan Waterfront continues to hum after darkness falls and offers a wide range of bars, restaurants and shops. It is named after Jean Dominique Michel de Caudan, who arrived in St Louis from Languedoc in France and started a saltpan close to St Louis in 1726.

This area is now known as the Robert Edward Hart Garden, and can be found on the entrance road to the Le Caudan waterfront. In fact – there is plenty of history and culture to soak up during your visit to Port Louis.

The waterfront is a great place for eating and drinking with a great selection of restaurants, bars and cafes. The seafood restaurants in the area are fantastic as they serve up the latest catch and local specialities.

Your Port Louis cruise: a rare glimpse into a fascinating history

On your jaunts and strolls through the town you are likely to come across some of the town’s fascinating and well preserved French colonial buildings. Take a look at the Government House, built in 1738, to get a unique insight into the island’s past that cannot be found on the busy, albeit beautiful, beaches.

Delve even deeper into the history of Mauritius by visiting the shrine of French Catholic priest and missionary Père Jacques Désiré Laval – who apparently converted 67,000 people to the Christian faith during 23 years in Mauritius. Today, he is a popular figure for Mauritians of a number of different religions, and miracles have been attributed to visits to his grave.

The Blue Penny Museum is a popular attraction. It houses and celebrates two of the rarest stamps in the world; the red one-penny and blue two-penny stamps of 1847. You will also find artefacts documenting the history of Mauritius’s exploration and settlement, giving you a unique opportunity to contrast the Port Louis of today and yesterday.

Excursions

Please note: The shore excursions listed are typical for this port. The full programme of shore excursions available for your cruise will be displayed on Cruise Personaliser at least 12 weeks prior to departure.
