Visit the stunning house and grounds of a Caribbean plantation and learn about the history and life on the estate, dating back to 18th century.

    Bois Cotlette Heritage Tour

Dating from the early years of French settlement in the 1720’s, Bois Cotlette is the oldest surviving estate on Dominica. Nestled in a valley within the active Morne Plat Pays volcanic complex, it is the best preserved example of plantation architecture on the island, with its French colonial ‘Maison de Maitre’ and buildings for the processing of coffee, sugar, and cocoa.

During a guided tour, you’ll discover the estate’s rich history through research provided by expert archaeologists and historians. Learn why archaeologists believe Bois Cotlette played such a key role for the English crown in the late 1700’s. The site has been of particular interest to historians and archaeologists with over 3,000 artefacts being unearthed during excavations on the estate since 2009. Your guide will bring the estate to life with tales of the owners and slave inhabitants and the importance of the estate’s crops over the past 300 years (coffee, sugar, cocoa and citrus).

Refreshments of authentic Creole snacks and fresh fruit juices will be served whilst you enjoy the pristine, tranquil grounds and plantation house.

This excursion will operate by minibus and on foot. Approximately 2 hours are spent at the Bois Cotlette Estate. There is some uneven terrain and cobblestones on the estate. In certain areas of the estate there is ongoing archaeological work being carried out – in these areas please keep to the marked paths. Videoing is not permitted on the estate.
