  • Caribbean Chocolate Experience

Discover how ‘real’ chocolate is produced on a Caribbean plantation, before enjoying the experience of creating your own chocolate delights.

    Caribbean Chocolate Experience

Bois Cotlette, the oldest surviving estate on Dominica, is one of a handful of places in the world that makes chocolate from its own fine flavour cocoa beans.

Your chocolate discovery begins with an orientation of the estate and its plantation. Whilst on the plantation, your expert guide will pluck a cocoa pod and reveal its surprising contents. At this point there is no resemblance to the chocolate we know, but you’ll get to discover how the pods are harvested, fermented, dried, roasted and ground, in order to transform them into the widely recognisable cocoa powder, cocoa butter and chocolate.

Your chocolate experience continues in the test kitchen, where you’ll witness the ‘Art of Chocolate’, as dark chocolate blocks are tempered and turned into mouth-watering treats. Use a chocolate ‘flavour wheel’ containing traditional and slightly wacky aromas to help you understand how connoisseurs learn to taste and appreciate fine flavour chocolate products.

The afternoon would not be complete without the chance to put your new knowledge to work with a chocolate tasting session. An absolute must for any chocolate lover!

This excursion will operate by coach and on foot. Approximately 2 hours are spent at the Bois Cotlette Estate. There is some uneven terrain and cobblestones on the estate. In certain areas of the estate there is ongoing archaeological work being carried out – in these areas please keep to the marked paths. Videoing is not permitted on the estate.

  • Bois Cotlette Heritage Tour

Visit the stunning house and grounds of a Caribbean plantation and learn about the history and life on the estate, dating back to 18th century.

    Bois Cotlette Heritage Tour

Dating from the early years of French settlement in the 1720’s, Bois Cotlette is the oldest surviving estate on Dominica. Nestled in a valley within the active Morne Plat Pays volcanic complex, it is the best preserved example of plantation architecture on the island, with its French colonial ‘Maison de Maitre’ and buildings for the processing of coffee, sugar, and cocoa.

During a guided tour, you’ll discover the estate’s rich history through research provided by expert archaeologists and historians. Learn why archaeologists believe Bois Cotlette played such a key role for the English crown in the late 1700’s. The site has been of particular interest to historians and archaeologists with over 3,000 artefacts being unearthed during excavations on the estate since 2009. Your guide will bring the estate to life with tales of the owners and slave inhabitants and the importance of the estate’s crops over the past 300 years (coffee, sugar, cocoa and citrus).

Refreshments of authentic Creole snacks and fresh fruit juices will be served whilst you enjoy the pristine, tranquil grounds and plantation house.

This excursion will operate by minibus and on foot. Approximately 2 hours are spent at the Bois Cotlette Estate. There is some uneven terrain and cobblestones on the estate. In certain areas of the estate there is ongoing archaeological work being carried out – in these areas please keep to the marked paths. Videoing is not permitted on the estate.
