La Palma cruises

Nicknamed ‘Isla Bonita’ or ‘The Beautiful Island,’ La Palma is one of the smaller Canary Islands. Its capital, Santa Cruz de la Palma, is a picturesque harbour located on the Eastern part of the island. The island’s landscape is a product of the volcanic formation, with numerous beaches of black sand, mountainous terrain and rich plant life. The famous fashion designer Manolo Blahnik was born and raised here.

  • Las Palomas Volcanic Tube

Explore a hidden world of magical caves and volcanic terrain, formed by an extensive lava flow from San Juan volcano.

    Las Palomas Volcanic Tube

The massive eruption of San Juan volcano in 1949 generated a significant series of lava vent from the lowest, El Llano del Banco, right through to the West of the coast of the island of La Palma. In the heart of this area is an impressive lava canal that has virtually formed a ‘roof’ over the land itself and resulted in the formation of over twenty caves, some of which are as deep as 2 km beneath the surface of the island.

The largest of these is the Las Palomas Volcanic Tube Natural Monument (known locally as ‘the cave of doves’). It has been adapted to accommodate tourist visits and now provides easy access to the caverns via a network of platforms. This will enable you to unlock the secrets and hidden wonders of some of the most spectacular volcanic structures on the island. This cave is a perfect example of how these subterranean structures have formed over time, both inside the cave and from the remarkable exterior.

Follow your knowledgeable and specialist guide on a guided walk as you explore the volcanic tube and discover the hidden secrets of the beautiful island of La Palma.

This excursion will operate by coach and on foot. The drive to Las Palomas Volcanic Tube Monument is approximately 1 hour each way. A refreshment of tea or coffee will be served at a local bar prior to arrival at the Volcanic Tube. Guests will be required to wear hard hats at the Volcanic Tube and are reminded to wear footwear suitable for hiking over rough, uneven and wet ground.

    The Heart of La Palma

Travelling through the mountain roads, which offer spectacular views, you will arrive at La Caldera de Taburiente. Designated a National Park, this particular volcanic crater is five miles wide and its rims reach right up to the mountain ridge that runs from the north to the south of the island. The crater was not actually formed as a result of volcanic activity, but from subsequent erosion, and it is forested with the exceptional fire-resistant Canary Pine.

Afterwards, take some time to relax and enjoy some local refreshments. On the way back, a brief photograph stop will be made at the viewpoint Mirador de la Concepcion, where you may admire the stunning views along the coast and to the north of the island.

This excursion will operate by coach and on foot. There is an estimated 45 minutes of walking on this tour over rough and uneven ground. You are advised to wear appropriate footwear and carry a sweater or warm clothing as the wind can be cooler and stronger the higher you travel (depending on time of year). This tour is not recommended for guests suffering from vertigo. It is forbidden to remove any stones or plants from the National Park. Smoking is not permitted at the National Park, and there no toilets within the Park. In case of extremely high temperatures and/or strong winds, the National Park may deny access for safety reasons.
