On Board Speakers

Lord Digby Jones
Lord Digby Jones - International Businessman and Cross Bench Peer

In addition to Digby's role as an active crossbencher in the House of Lords he serves as Chairman of Triumph Motorcycles Limited, Non-Executive Deputy Chairman of the Unipart Expert Practices (UEP) Division and Chairman of Grove Industries. He advises in a number of other paid and unpaid roles, fulfilling his vision of promoting socially inclusive wealth creation.

Digby Jones was born into business. Some of his earliest memories are of life in a busy corner shop where he lived with his family. It was here he learnt the first rudiments of business – important values that were never to leave him.

During his three years with the Royal Navy, Digby learnt about leadership, teamwork and the importance of constant communication. His graduation from University College London was followed by 20 years with legal firm Edge & Ellison, where he developed a vision of business and its role in society, and began to believe firmly in socially inclusive wealth creation.

Later, as Director General of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), Digby campaigned on a range of issues – including the move from traditional manufacturing of commodities to value-added, innovative products and services. He lobbied against protectionism protesting that “it is a scourge which may well find short term popularity but inhibits growth, reduces wealth and oppresses the weak.”

In 2005 he was knighted for his services to business, and in 2007 was appointed Minister of State for UK Trade & Investment. He also became a life peer taking the title, Digby, Lord Jones of Birmingham Kb. He did not join the party of government, but instead chose to concentrate on promoting British business across the world, travelling to 31 countries in 45 overseas visits.

Phil Holt
Phil Holt - Aviation

Philip was born in Lancashire in 1954. He joined the local Air Training Corps at the age of 13 and from that moment he never looked back, using his training wisely he developed an interest in flying and Air Traffic Control.

Gliding and flying training then followed finally leading to a successful application to join the National Air Traffic Control service in 1972. Phil retired after 39 years of service having served at several units including Heathrow, London Centre, a joint Military Radar Unit in Yorkshire, Edinburgh (when he became the units Training Officer) and his longest service at Manchester airport where he was involved in bringing into service the second runway. “As an Air Traffic Controller, the sense of job satisfaction is tremendous, which didn’t diminish in nearly 40 years” he says.

He has been a pilot for over thirty five years and has been an instructor in the RAF Reserve as well as a para drop pilot and a member of the St. John’s Ambulance Air Wing. He also organises and controls air shows (hence the connection with the Red Arrows) where he can get close (sometimes very close!) to his beloved preserved World War Two aircraft.

We’re looking forward to showing you the world

I’ve always found exploring great cities a real delight, especially from the comfort and luxury of a Cunard ship. Cruising is the best way to see the world and Cunard has been learning its trade since 1840. We're ready to go, all that remains is for you to decide where you'd like us to take you.
