George McGhee
George McGhee - Film & Entertainment Historian

George has worked in the film and television industry for over 35 years, starting as a film editor and retiring from being Controller of Programme Acquisitions at the BBC in London, where he was responsible for all feature film and series acquisitions. Whilst there he acquired the Indiana Jones films and The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise plus such series' as the Tudors, Mad Men, Damages and many others.

During George's career he met many of the greats, including Ginger Rogers, Anthony Quinn, Angela Lansbury, Alice Faye, Bette Davis, Tom Cruise, Jane Russell, Douglas Fairbanks Jnr, Glenn Close, Will Smith and Diana Rigg. He recently presented a sell-out evening in conversation with Claire Bloom in London and is currently working on a book on the star system.

Gloria Barnett
Gloria Barnett - Oceanographer

Scientist, author and presenter Gloria started out as a biologist with a special interest in oceanography. Gloria obtained her first degree in sciences, before completing her Masters Degree in education.

Gloria enjoyed teaching Science to 11-18 year old students for 15 years before moving on to life as an Education Consultant and Examiner involved in school improvement projects with inner city schools. The consultancy work included advising science teachers, writing teaching materials for science lessons, together with presenting teacher training courses on “Teaching Exciting Science” and writing revision books for A-level biology. 

Gloria’s love of the sea is not just theoretical - she enjoys sailing, scuba diving and underwater videography and has dived in a variety of areas around the world studying the underwater creatures she talks about on Cruise Ships. Gloria is the author of  The Amazing World Beneath the Waves and in this fully illustrated guide, Gloria shares her passion for the sea, explaining in accessible terms the fascinating underwater world of our planet’s oceans.

Ian Brown
Ian Brown - Police & Criminology

Ian Brown started his career as a beat constable in the Lake District, later joining the Metropolitan Police and then heading a Drug Squad in the Caribbean.

He was involved in high profiled cases including The Sweeney armed robberies, Brinks Mat Gold Bullion robbery (which ended tragically with the death of a police officer at the hands of  Kenneth Noye) and The Krays.

With a career lasting thirty years, Ian has many anecdotal stories to entertain and fascinate you related with real insight and authority. These may include Ted Heath’s yacht Morning Cloud and Princess Diana’s Caribbean adventure.

Ian received over 30 commendations during his service, from the UK, Caribbean and the USA, including the Queens Commendation for Bravery.

John McCarthy
John McCarthy CBE - Writer and Broadcaster

John McCarthy has worked as a journalist since leaving university. His life was infamously changed when, on his first foreign assignment, he was abducted in Beirut by Islamic fundamentalists and held hostage for 1,943 days.

Subsequently, John's experience was explored in the film Blind Flight and in his best-selling book Some Other Rainbow (co-written with Jill Morrell). His other books are (with Brian Keenan) Between Extremes, A Ghost Upon Your Path: An Irish Journey and You Can't Hide the Sun: A Journey through Palestine

Alongside his writing John has pursued a broadcast career, with many of his programmes reflecting his knowledge of and interest in travel, religion and history. On television he’s worked for the BBC, ITV, Sky Arts and Al Jazeera. For radio he has presented on the BBC World Service and Radio 2. On Radio 4 he is a regular presenter of Something Understood and contributor to Saturday Live. He is Patron of the Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture, and has been awarded an Honorary D.Litt from Hull and the CBE.

Rick Reynolds
Rick Reynolds - Aviator & Concorde Expert

Hear about the legendary Concorde from one of the fleet's former pilots, Rick Reynolds. Rick's fun and lively talks convey the thrill of flying the world's most famous supersonic aircraft, and cover the events which culminated in the final grounding of Concorde.

Rick has flown a BAC 1-11 jet, a Boeing 757, and the Boeing 767 long-haul. In Nov 1996 he was thrilled to hear his bid to fly Concorde had been successful and he flew supersonic until the fleet was retired in 2000. Rick was promoted to Captain on the Boeing 757 / 767 which he continued to pilot both short- and long-haul until his early retirement in 2010.

Founded eighty years ago this prestigious school is open to anyone interested in developing their skills in painting and drawing and looking for a creative boost. Situated in the fishing town of St Ives, Cornwall in studios overlooking the spectacular Porthmeor Beach, the Grade II* listed Porthmeor Studios building has been an inspiring workspace for artists for over a century. Today, the St Ives School of Painting operates out of two of the building’s studios. With practicing artists as tutors and a reputation for friendly and quality tuition they deliver short courses all year round in small groups. Covering every conceivable subject, style and medium, these suit beginners to the more experienced. They even run a year long programme that is all about developing your own voice as an artist.
