Commander Jeff Tall OBE RN - Submarine Specialist
Commander Jeff Tall OBE RN

Commander Jeff Tall OBE RN retired as the Director of the Royal Navy Submarine Museum, a post he held from June 1994 when he left the Royal Navy.

Jeff was a submariner for twenty-eight years, during which time he served all over the world and commanded four submarines. Two were diesel driven Patrol submarines, HMS Olympus and Finwhale; the next was the nuclear powered Attack submarine, HMS Churchill; and his final ‘drive’ was the nuclear powered, nuclear missile armed deterrent submarine, HMS Repulse. As well as commanding submarines during the Cold War, he also served as Admiral Sandy Woodward’s submarine staff officer onboard the flagship HMS Hermes during the Falklands Conflict in 1982. He was awarded the OBE in December 1993. He has written a number of books, delivers many public lectures, and makes regular appearances on radio and television.

Eric Flounders
Eric Flounders - Maritime Historian

Eric Flounders spent 27 years as Cunard's public relations manager. Two decades of answering esoteric questions from the public has given him a good insight into Cunard's fascinating history.

Eric joined Cunard as public relations manager in 1984, a post he held until he retired. He has given regular talks on the history of Cunard in schools, company seminars, universities, clubs, travel agents, Carnival UK Staff and societies as part of his public relations post for Cunard. He has lectured on board QE2 several times and was a local councillor for 16 years.

Malcolm Nelson
Malcolm Nelson - Customs Expert

Malcolm Nelson is an historian, criminologist, and formerly a customs officer. Malcolm spent much of his working life catching drug smugglers.

Malcolm's talks are informative and extremely amusing, giving an insight into exactly how customs officers catch smugglers. Some of the stories he tells are indeed stranger than fiction.

Derek Taylor - Historian & Journalist

Historian and author Derek Taylor charts the 800 year story of the Great Charter, the Magna Carter, regarded as the world’s beacon of justice and freedom from oppression.

Derek will talk about how King John was not quite the tyrant we all once thought, and how the Magna Carta itself was almost lost. Learn how from an unpromising start the Magna Carta's influence managed to grow over the centuries, until in our own age it almost brought down a US President.

Astronomer Paul Fellows
Paul Fellows - Astronomer

Paul Fellows is co-presenter of the public observing season at the University of Cambridge leading the live outdoor shows every week (or giving indoor presentations when the clouds get in the way). Either way these attract audiences of 200+ on a regular basis and are aimed to appeal to people of all levels from the complete beginner who wants to know where to start, yet hopefully adding something even for the more knowledgeable. There will be no equations, apart that is, from E=mc2.

Having built his first telescope aged 14 and experiencing the wow moment of seeing the rings of Saturn for the first time, Paul has been stargazing for some 40 years and has his own private observatory where he images the sky, taking pictures of galaxies, clusters, nebulae and planets. Many of his own images will appear in his talks.

Writer Anthony Horowitz
Anthony Horowitz OBE - Author & Journalist

Anthony Horowitz is one of the most prolific and successful writers working in the UK – unique for working across so many media. Anthony is a born polymath; juggling writing books, TV series, films, plays and journalism.

Anthony has written over 40 books including the bestselling teen spy series Alex Rider, estimated to have sold 19 million copies. The latest book in the series, Never Say Die, was be published in June 2017 and a set of short stories will follow in 2018. Anthony is also an acclaimed writer for adults. He was commissioned by the Conan Doyle Estate to write two new Sherlock Holmes novels; The House of Silk was published in November 2011 and was internationally lauded. The sequel, Moriarty, was published in October 2014 with similar success. The Ian Fleming Estate then asked him to write a continuation James Bond novel, Trigger Mortis, and in 2016 he became the first writer to be invited to produce a second, which is currently being written. His latest standalone novel, Magpie Murders, was released in October 2016 to critical acclaim and 2017 has seen the release of The Word is Murder, the first of a series of detective novels.

Anthony is responsible for creating and writing some of the UK’s most beloved and successful television series’, producing the first seven episodes of Midsomer Murders. He is the writer and creator of award-winning drama series Foyle’s War. He has also written other original complex dramas for ITV, including Collision, following with equally successful thriller Injustice in 2011. Returning as a Cold War thriller Foyle’s War was greeted with such critical acclaim and demands for more that he wrote one final series, bringing the show to an end in 2015. His latest crime drama for BBC1, New Blood, was broadcast in the summer of 2016.

Anthony regularly contributes to variety of national newspapers and magazines on subjects ranging from politics to education and is on the board of the Old Vic Theatre. He has been a patron to East Anglia Children’s Hospices and the anti-bullying charity, Kidscape, since 2008. In 2014, he was awarded an OBE for his services to literature.
