Elsinore cruises

Homeland of Hygge, the art of comfort and cosiness, Denmark is a country of peaceful surroundings and pleasant surprises. It’s hard to imagine the all-conquering Vikings setting sail from these quiet shores. The eastern port city of Helsingor, known as Elsinore in English, is proud to share its 600 year seafaring history with visitors today. The Renaissance four-sided fortress of Kronborg Castle, the setting for Shakespeare’s Hamlet, is a popular highlight and now a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Helsingor’s Cultural Heritage

Hygge is the Danish way of snuggling up with a roaring fire, some scented candles and big comfy chair in the company of your friends and family. Find your own Hygge happiness with fellow travellers and new friends in the welcoming nautical theme bars of Helsingor and help keep tradition alive with Danish drinking songs and sea-shanties. It’s all about the sea here and the calendar is full of special dates and festivals with musical parades and dancing to celebrate.

The Toldkammeret Culture Centre in the old dockyard hosts concerts, theatre and cinema. Nearby the Spisestuen restaurant of the exceptional ultra-modern Kulturvaerft building serves very good fish and chips and national dishes like Flaeskesteg (roasted pork) and microbrews.

Discover all you need to know about Helsingor’s history at the M/S Maritime Museum. Outside a shining steel statue of a silvery boy called Han (meaning ‘Him’) sits on a rock staring wistfully out to sea, just like Hans Christian Andersen’s Little Mermaid, 45 minutes down the coast by train in Denmark’s capital, Copenhagen

Discover Helsingor

Shakespeare is said to have set his most famous work, Hamlet, in the 16th Century Kronborg Castle overlooking the Oresond Strait. Today, beneath the ornate spires you can explore the royal chambers, the banquet hall, the ballroom and the palace chapel on guided tours led by actors playing the parts from Hamlet.

In more recent times during WWII, fishermen of the Helsingor community smuggled almost all of the country’s 7,800 Danish Jews on the twenty minute crossing to a new, bright future in neutral Sweden.

Take time to absorb all this fascinating history at a café on Axel Torv square in the heart of Helsingor. Coffee and cake is a craze most of us would like to keep and here in the home of Danish pastry, the superb array of sweet delights exceeds expectations.

Excursions

Please note: The shore excursions listed are typical for this port. The full programme of shore excursions available for your cruise will be displayed on Cruise Personaliser at least 12 weeks prior to departure.

  • WWII & Rescue of the Danish Jews

Hear powerful stories of Sealand’s wartime past from a local guide who survived the events of World War II.

WWII & Rescue of the Danish Jews

Located at the northernmost point in Sealand around 20km from Elsinore, Gilleleje played a vital and fascinating part in World War II. As the destination for the escape of many Danish Jews, refugees were hidden in many places around the town, while fishermen prepared to transport them across the water to Sweden. Hiding places included various summerhouses, attics and even the loft of the small local church. Hear the stories of some of the fugitives, and the locals who helped them, from your local guide – herself an escapee when her parents fled from the Gestapo during the war.

Your walking tour will take you through the winding streets between thatched fishermen’s cottages from the church towards the harbour where local craftspeople can be seen working. Afterwards, you will have free time to explore the village and harbour further at your leisure.

On your scenic return drive along the coast, a stop will be made at an historic watermill. Set in the idyllic surroundings of lush forest and rugged beach, the thatched building dates back to 1765, and is now a restaurant where coffee and Danish pastries will be served.

This excursion will operate by coach and on foot. There is approximately 1½ hours of walking on this tour, as well as some steps to negotiate.
