  • Macadamia Discovery

    A unique opportunity to learn how the Valhalla Macadamia Nut Farm contributes to the preservation of the environment.

    Heading north through the Pacific Coastal lowlands of the country, marvel at the impressive views of the volcanoes - Acatenango, Agua and Fuego - ( weather permitting) on your way to the Valhalla Organic Macadamia Nut Farm. The farm is dedicated to the preservation and healing of the planet through sustainable agriculture. For over 20 years, they have been planting and maintaining Macadamia trees and preserving the rainforest.

    A guided tour around the plantation and production area will show you how this project is helping the community. Discover how Guatemala has become one of the world's major macadamia nut producers.

    During your visit, there will be some free time to browse the gift shop for a souvenir.

    La Antigua On Your Own

    This simple transfer will transport you to the former capital and World Heritage Site of La Antigua Guatemala. Here, you will have around five hours at leisure to enjoy the city's well preserved architecture and impressive remains. The Spanish colonial style is visible in every area of the city; its houses, parks, squares and churches. La Antigua is also well known for its jade factories and ceramics.

    Upon arrival, a coordinator will greet you in La Antigua, provide you with city maps and advise you on the best directions to take, to help make the most of your day.

    After your visit, you will meet at the designated meeting time and place for the return drive to Puerto Quetzal.


    This excursion operates by coach and on foot. The transfer time to La Antigua is approximately 1.5 hours each way. This tour is non-guided and does not include any meals, refreshments or entrance fees. You are advised to carry local currency or small denominations of $US. The level of walking is at guest's discretion. There are some uneven and cobblestone surfaces to negotiate. Flat, comfortable shoes are recommended. Please take careful note of the return meeting point and time, as the coach cannot be held for latecomers.

    Take a walk on the wild side! This is an experience designed to delight bird lovers, photographers and nature enthusiasts alike.

    Guatemalan Bird Watch & Nature Walk

    Calling all bird buffs and nature lovers… this is a tour that will leave you flocking for more. It’s a veritable feast for the senses; filled with all the natural sights, sounds and sub-tropical scents that Guatemala has to offer.

    Embark on a comfortable air conditioned coach ride from the port, taking you through the lush southern lowlands of Guatemala, and up through the mountains to La Reunion Golf Resort and Residences – situated a safe distance from, but within sight of the magnificent, towering Fuego volcano. The facility spans 147 hectares of humid sub-tropical forest and is home to an abundance of birdlife.

    You’ll have the opportunity to photograph a number of species, including the Gartered Trogon, the Pacific Parakeet, the Bar-Winged Oriole, Black-Winged vultures and the Red-Tailed Hawy – to name a few. The estate is also home to 60,000 orchids spanning 750 varieties, including 200 exquisite miniature orchids.

    After a fascinating bird-watching and nature trail, you’ll be served snacks and refreshments at the residence itself before boarding your bus and making your way back to the port.


    ACTIVITY EXCURSIONS

    Experience a thrilling guided hike near the active Pacaya Volcano. Trek up a mountain and take in the panorama on the way.

    Pacaya Volcano Hike

    Definitely the most exciting geo-adventure tour in Guatemala! The Pacaya Volcano is one of the few active volcanoes in America that you can hike on, experience up-close volcanic activity and watch lava flow, in a safe environment.

    Your adventure begins as you board your air conditioned coach. Then it’s time to sit back and relax and take in the beauty of your surroundings, as you travel for an hour through the lush countryside towards San Francisco de Sales village Tourist Center. You’ll soon arrive at the Pacaya National Park, home to the majestic 8,371 foot Pacaya Volcano which attracts 65,000 visitors annually.

    Meet your certified nature guides, who will introduce you to the splendour of the primeval forest as you begin your hike up the mountain. Eventually, you’ll come to the beautifully coloured volcanic rock. Weather and safety permitting you’ll reach a platform where you’ll be met with incredible views, which you can capture on camera. After you ascent, it will be time to take a break and enjoy your surrounding with a light snack, so you can refuel for your descent back down.

    Heading back to your ship you’ll make a stop for a typical luncheon and afterwards, you’ll head back on the return journey to Puerto Quetzal.

There is approximately 2½ miles of walking over dirt paths, loose sand, rocks, inclines, steep surfaces and uneven ground. Due to the nature of hiking on an active volcano, the tour can be cancelled at any time, either before departure or during the tour to guarantee your safety at all times. Please wear comfortable closed toe walking shoes and long trousers. The trail is not shaded, so please wear sun protection, hat and bring additional water.

  • Filadelfia Coffee Estate & Panorama

    An opportunity to visit a Guatemalan coffee estate and sample some aromatic flavours.

    Filadelfia Coffee Estate & Panorama

    Enjoy a scenic drive through the lowlands and on to the Filadelfia Coffee Estate, an ecological project covering an area of approximately 250 acres of land. The estate runs reforestation programmes seeding White Pine, Gravilea, mahogany, cedar and cypress, and contributes to the well being of the country's ecology.

    You will be taken on a guided tour of the estate to see the wet mill, dry mill and the hand sorting process. Sample two of the greatest coffee classifications, their aromas, body, acidity and their differences. During your visit, a light snack and soft drink refreshment will also be served.

    Your next stop will be at the city of Santiago de los Caballeros, known today as La Antigua Guatemala. You’ll see the La Merced Church (exterior view) and take a walk through Calle del Arco and on to the main Plaza. The Colourful façades, churches, palaces, and colourful bougainvillea make this Spanish colonial city a favourite with visitors from all over the world.


    This excursion operates by coach and on foot. The journey time to Filadelfia is around 1½ hours and the return drive from La Antigua is around 1½ hours. This tour involves approximately one hour of walking over some rough and uneven ground including steps. Comfortable, flat shoes are recommended.Due to municipal regulations buses are not permitted to drive to the main plaza, therefore there is an approximate walk of 700 metres from the coach drop off to the plaza.

  • Historic Sugar Plantation Home

    Discover the history and traditions at the mansion of an 18th century sugar plantation.

    Historic Sugar Plantation Home

    Enjoy a scenic drive heading north along the highway. Arrive at the Casona de Don Pancho, a beautiful former sugar plantation mansion dating from the 1800's and set amongst flowering gardens, with spectacular views of the surrounding area.

    Once home to the plantation owner, its antique furnishings provide an insight into the history of the families who lived there. During a guided tour, discover the fascinating history of how the sugar was once processed. Visit the farmer's chapel and the ruins of the former local processing plan. Take a stroll to admire the beautiful gardens and look out for some of the local wildlife, including exotic birds, geese and peacocks.

    During your tour, local refreshments will be served whilst a local marimba delight you with their music. Re-board your coach for the return drive to the port.


    This excursion operates by coach and on foot. This tour involves approximately 45 minutes walking over some rough and uneven cobblestone ground. There are six steps to enter the mansion. The journey to the plantation mansion is approximately 1.5 hours each way.

  • Chapin Safari Park

    An opportunity to enjoy a close up view of some of the world’s animals, at Chapin Safari Park.

    Chapin Safari Park

    Depart the pier for a scenic drive to the Chapin Safari and Zoological Park. En route, you will pass through picturesque lowland pastures, and take in views of volcanoes which dominate the horizon (weather permitting).

    Founded in 1980 as a natural reserve area, Chapin is among the largest animal parks in the region that features drive-through, pedestrian and recreation areas. Upon arrival, you will enjoy a scenic drive through the open-air park and see a variety of different animals from the comfort of your air-conditioned coach.

    Afterwards, you will have the opportunity to take a walk around an area, which is more resemblance of a regular zoo, to view animals, birds and reptiles indigenous to Guatemala, as well as species from around the world.

    A cooling refreshment will be served in the pavilion, prior to your drive back to Puerto Quetzal.


    Note: The journey to Chapin is approximately 1¼ hours. Park regulations do not allow anyone to venture outside of the vehicle during the safari drive. As the vehicles are air-conditioned, the windows do not open. This tour involves approximately 45 minutes of walking over uneven ground with some steps. Toilet facilities are available at the entrance of the park but are limited. Comfortable, flat, walking shoes are recommended.

    Step back in time and experience La Antigua Guatemala's rich architecture and impressive remains.

    La Antigua Guatemala

    La Antigua Guatemala has been declared a World Heritage Site due to its wealth of colonial architecture. Toppled by earthquakes, the preserved ruins include fallen domes adorned with creeping vines, and plazas and chapels that were miraculously spared.

    Visit the Casa K'Ojom Museum, part of the Azotea Cultural Centre. K'Ojom, meaning 'music' is an interactive museum where festivities, dances and traditions offer an insight into this fascinating region. You will also see the church of La Merced, with its beautiful facade and convent (exterior view only). At the San Francis Church and Museum, you will learn about Saint Hermano Pedro, and the lives of the Franciscan Order in Guatemala. During your tour, a stop will also be made at at the jade factory and time permitting the main Plaza.

    A local style buffet luncheon will be served at one of the city's hotels.

    Embark on a scenic journey, taking in volcanic mountains, farmland and agricultural communities along the way. Your destination is the lakeside village of San Lucas Toliman, where you will board a boat for an hour long trip across Lake Atitlan. Enjoy the lovely views in this area of natural beauty, as you make your way to Panajachel.

    Enjoy free time at the small community village of Panajachel is an 800 year old 'pueblo'and is home to around 14,000 inhabitants, most of which are Mayans. The Mayan culture remains noticeably strong amongst the community. Time permitting, stroll around Panajachel, browse the local handicrafts stalls and continue to enjoy views of Atitan Lake. During your visit, a typical buffet luncheon will be served at a local hotel.

    Sit back and relax on the return journey as you enjoy the Guatemalan scenery once more, before arriving into Puerto Quetzal.


    This excursion operates by coach, boat and on foot. The journey to San Lucas takes approximately 2.5 hours on buses equipped with toilets. There is cobblestone ground and an incline to reach the boat pier. There are approximately 25 steps to negotiate when embarking the boat. The boat trip takes one hour each way. This tour involves some walking, which includes uneven ground and steep pathways in Panajachel. Comfortable, flat, non-slip shoes and a lightweight jacket are recommended. Please note that due to the popularity of Atitlan Lake and Panajachel some waiting time may be experienced when boarding the boat, this may affect the visiting time in Panajachel.
