  • Traditional Villages

    Volos sits in the shadow of Mount Pelion, one of the most beautiful and mountainous areas in all of Greece.

    Your scenic drive will take you along the waterfront, leaving the modern town of Volos behind and ascending the slopes of Mount Pelion as you pass traditional villages that have remained unchanged for centuries. This is one of the most beautiful regions of Greece, with lush vegetation and abundant trees. Your drive will also take you past the popular summer resort of Portaria.


    Set on the slopes of Mount Pelion is the delightful little village of Makrynitsa, from the heart of the town, your guide will host you on a walk. Soak up the atmosphere as you stroll along the traditional narrow cobble-stoned streets filled with small shops displaying honeyed fruit, herbs and spices. The winding street will lead you to the village square and town hub, known locally as the ‘balcony of Volos’, admire the breathtaking views across the town and down to the Gulf of Pagasae far below. Before browsing the many craft and souvenir shops, relax and enjoy some refreshments including a tasty tradition Greek desert.
    Continuing on to the quaint village of Portaria, enjoy a brief orientation and then time at leisure to explore the peaceful pathways.


    Note: There is approximately 1 hour of walking on this tour over a slight incline and some cobble stones.

    Visit the Volos Museum, and discover the ancient treasures abound within its walls. Not only does it house a unique collection from the Hellenistic period, but it also displays beautiful jewellery more than 3,000 years old.

    Drive along the waterfront, leaving the modern town of Volos behind and ascend the slopes of Mount Pelion as you pass traditional villages which have remained unchanged for centuries. This is one of the most beautiful regions of Greece, with lush vegetation and abundant trees.

    The Makrynitsa Village is located on the slopes of Mount Pelion. Join your guide for a walk along the traditional narrow cobbled streets filled with small shops displaying honeyed fruit, herbs and spices, the typical goods of small mountain villages. The village square and town hub, locally known as the ‘balcony of Volos,’ offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding countryside, Volos and the Gulf of Pagasae far below. Enjoy free time to browse through Makrynitsa’s craft and souvenir shops, or just relax at a local café.

    Discover the beauty of the Pelion region, combined with some relaxation on the beach.

    Embark on a scenic drive to the foothills of the Pelion mountain range, to the picturesque village of Makrynitsa.

    Upon arrival, admire the stunning panoramic vistas to the Pagasitikos Gulf and Volos. With your guide, enjoy a stroll through the narrow winding streets and marvel at the unique architecture, magnificent mansions and houses, its churches and water fountains.

    Continuing on to the quaint seaside hamlet of Koropi, where you’ll have 3 hours to relax on the beautiful tree lined sandy beach of Boufa. Follow your guide to your reserved umbrellas and sun beds and sip a refreshing cool soft drink.

    BEACH/WATER RELATED EXCURSIONS
    For any excursion involving water, guests are reminded to exercise particular care. Alcohol and eating a full meal should be avoided before swimming. If buoyancy aids are provided for an activity they must be worn at all times. You should bear in mind that the sea is unpredictable. Lifeguards are unlikely to be present and there may not be a flag system to indicate whether or not it is safe to go in the water. In addition, beach activities may not be supervised or accompanied and so you should take care to satisfy yourself as to the safety of the beach and/or the sea at the time of your excursion. Please exercise caution when entering the sea as the seabed and aquatic environment is capable of springing surprises and we have not inspected the beach or seabed for its safety. Children must be supervised by you at all times near water. All activities on the beach, water and in the sea are undertaken at your own risk. You’ll need to take swimwear, a towel, sunscreen and flat shoes that can be worn in the water.

    LIABILITY
    Cunard will arrange for the excursions to be performed by the relevant excursion provider. Cunard does not provide or supply the excursion services. Cunard will exercise reasonable care and skill in the selection of the excursion provider, but will not in any circumstances have a greater liability than the excursion supplier and Cunard shall not be responsible for the negligent acts/omissions of the excursion supplier. Please note that in relation to all excursions Cunard is not responsible or liable for any loss, damage, or injury sustained by you unless such loss, damage or injury arises out of a breach of legal duty of Cunard.

    TRAVEL INSURANCE
    Before booking any activity excursions it is essential that you ensure your travel insurance extends to cover the specified activity. It is your responsibility to obtain adequate insurance.

    This excursion will operate by coach and on foot. The tour includes an uphill walk over some uneven cobblestoned streets from the coach drop off point to reach the village of Makrynitsa. Please remember to bring your swimsuit, a towel, a sun hat, a bottle of water and sun protection. Before you book this excursion, you must refer to the ‘Beach / Water Related’ paragraphs under the Guide to Symbols in this brochure.

  • Magical Meteora

    Meteora is a unique, unforgettable phenomenon with vast granite rocks, many of them crowned with 600-year-old monasteries.

    Magical Meteora

    Take a drive through Volos via Thessaly on your journey to Larissa, capital of the province to reach the Meteora Monasteries. These inaccessible pinnacles of rock served as an ideal refuge for medieval monks and offered the isolation sought for religious prayer and the safety from plundering bandits.

    Your guide will take you to two of the monasteries via numerous steps, pausing periodically to relate their stories and rich history. The climb is well rewarded as you tour the interesting monastic buildings and admire the sweeping views of the low plains of Thessaly, as well as the neighbouring monasteries atop their pillars of stone. As you stand and observe the panorama, you cannot help but be amazed and filled with admiration for those early pious monks whose gritty determination built these religious monuments.

    Luncheon will be served at a local restaurant before the drive back to Volos.


    Note: The drive between Volos and Meteora is approximately two hours each way. Guests are advised to wear comfortable walking shoes, as there is approximately two hours of walking with numerous steps to negotiate. Please dress appropriately for entering the monasteries. Ladies are requested to wear skirts and have their shoulders covered. Shorts are not permitted. Cameras and videos are not permitted inside the monastery buildings, although photography is allowed in the forecourts.

    Scenic Vintage Train

    Relax in the comfort of your air-conditioned coach for a short transfer to the pretty village of Ano Lehonia.

    As the whistle blows, it’s ‘all aboard’ the famous narrow-gauge "moutzouris - smudgy" vintage train for an unforgettable experience. Steeped in history, the train first started transporting passengers and goods in 1895, but was closed in 1971, as it was deemed too expensive to operate. Only recently, has the train been put back in operation to showcase the spectacular sights and scenery of the region.

    Make sure you have your camera ready, as you climb the mountain tracks and journey along a dreamlike route, passing through olive groves and many of the traditional Pelion villages, a truly unique experience. During your journey, you’ll travel across several magnificent bridges, including a five-arched bridge and a sturdy iron bridge, which is unique in Europe.

    Upon arrival Milies, join your knowledgeable guide for a short walking tour of this picturesque village, exploring its cobble streets, lined with traditional stone houses.


    This tour will operate by coach and vintage train. The operation of the train is weather dependent and may be cancelled at short notice. The journey on the train is approximately 1½ hours and there are no toilet facilities onboard. There is approximately, 30 minutes of walking included, over some uneven and cobbled terrain. To board the train there is approximately three steep steps.The advertised itinerary may operate in reverse. Due to a steep incline at Milies station guests may use a small transfer vehicle to assist them to/ from the coach park.
