La Spezia, Italy - Mediterranean Cruises

Tucked into the Ligurian coastline between Genoa and Pisa, is the pretty town of La Spezia – one of Italy’s most important military and commercial harbours. But it’s not this that attracts so many. La Spezia is the gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage Site called Cinque Terre – a collection of five coastal villages perched on the coastline.

  • Pisa and Wine Tasting

Discover why the Leaning Tower is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Pisa, followed by a generous tasting of local Tuscan wine.

    Pisa and Wine Tasting

Originally an Etruscan trading post, Pisa grew to be one of the greatest commercial and seafaring towns in the Mediterranean. Today, Pisa offers Renaissance splendour intermingled with modern shops and lively cafés.

The setting for the famous Leaning Tower and splendid Cathedral is the Field of Miracles. Here you’ll also find the Baptistry and Campo Santo.

The foundations of the Leaning Tower of Pisa began to subside when the builders reached the 4th storey, and each year it was said to lean a little more. A band around the tower prevented further lean, and the tower is now in the same condition as it was in 1810 (exterior visit only).

Time permitting, you’ll have a chance to do a spot of shopping and browse Pisa’s many souvenir shops.

The Tuscan hills are home to some of the finest wines in the world, including Chianti, and after a scenic ride through the Italian wine country you’ll visit a typical wine producer, tour the winery, and learn how Tuscan wines are created.

Enjoy a generous wine tasting with local products in this privileged setting, ending with a taste of Vin Santo – a sweet dessert wine.

After a day filled with the aromas and tastes of Tuscany, take in more beautiful scenery during the return drive to La Spezia.

This excursion operates by coach and on foot. The majority of this tour is on foot and flat comfortable walking shoes are recommended. There is a 15-minute walk to and from the coach park to the Field of Miracles. Shoulders and knees must be covered to enter the Cathedral. Euros are accepted for purchases.

Discover the breathtaking Cinque Terre, a national park of five dramatically situated villages clinging to the cliffs.

    Beautiful Cinque Terre

The name Cinque Terre, ‘five Lands’ was once only accessible by sea and even today there are no proper roads linking the villages you visit on this unique tour.

Travelling on the motorway to Manarola, you’ll capture the delightful coastal landscape along the way, and see the steep rugged and often vertical cliffs down to the sea below.

You’ll arrive into Manarola, where you’ll enjoy the beautiful surroundings before re-boarding the boat and heading to the charming village of Vernazza. Some free time will be given for you to explore this picturesque fishing village at leisure.

Afterwards, you’ll continue by boat to Monterosso, the most famous of the five lands and enjoy a guided introduction of the village. Some free time will be given for you to purchase your own luncheon from one of the local cafés or restaurants and to browse the local shops. You’ll rejoin your guide for a short walk to the train station, where you will take the local train back to La Spezia.

This excursion operates by boat, train and on foot. This tour involves extensive walking, which includes some uneven ground. There are around 100 steps to negotiate throughout the tour. Flat, non-slip walking shoes are essential. Guests are advised to take sun protection, a bottle of water and Euros for purchases. The boat ride to Monterosso will be replaced by train in the event of poor sea conditions. The train is a local service and is not exclusive to Cunard guests.
