    Enjoy the highlights of Horta on foot, visiting the Peter Café Sport and the Scrimshaw Museum.

    Explore Horta on Foot

    Join your knowledgeable guide on a leisurely walk through the town of Horta. Pause to capture photos of the beautiful marina, which is usually filled with yachts using Horta as a port of call during their voyage across the Atlantic. The walls and walkways are covered in colourful paintings created by visitors from all over the world, who have noted the name of their vessel and crew, as well as the year they visited.

    Your guided walk continues to the town centre and past the ‘Forte de Sta Cruz’, a wonderful 16th century fortress that was transformed into a small hotel in 1969. From here you’ll proceed to one of the town’s main attractions; Peter Café Sport. Established in 1918 as a coffee house to provide shelter and support for international yachtsman, Peter Café Sport has remained a popular place for yachtsmen and tourists, and following the opening of the Peter’s Scrimshaw Museum in 1986, it is now a place that visitors to Faial must visit.

    Round off your tour with a visit to the Scrimshaw Museum, which showcases an impressive private collection of sculptures carved from the teeth of sperm whales.


    This excursion will operate entirely on foot from the quayside and involves 2 hours of walking plus some steps, inclines and uneven ground.

  • A Walk from Capelinhos to Varadouro

    Explore the landscape left behind by Horta’s now extinct volcanoes, on foot.

    A Walk from Capelinhos to Varadouro

    Setting off from the port you’ll drive to the Capelinhos Volcano, which rose from the sea in 1957. The volcano is now extinct, but you’ll see the effects of its devastating eruption. From here, you’ll begin your walk to Varadouro.

    This guided walk explores what is certainly the most beautiful part of this lush volcanic island.With every step, you'll be seduced by scenery and immersed in a culture that is a unique blend of Portuguese tradition and natural history.

    Varadouro is a natural bay and is recognised by its natural pools made of black volcanic stone. It is a popular spot for summerhouses and offers lovely coastal views. Here, your walk will finish and you’ll take the return drive to the port.

    During this tour, a short comfort stop will be made at a local café bar where refreshments can be purchased if required.


    This excursion is conducted by coach and on foot. Views are dependent on weather conditions on the day. The walk lasts approximately 2½ hours and is over five miles. Flat, non slip footwear suitable for walking over uneven, rough and sometimes wet ground are essential. A weatherproof jacket should be worn. It is advisable to carry some bottled water. There are no facilities for purchasing refreshments during the walk however there will be a short comfort stop en route to Capelinhos Volcano. Toilet facilities may be limited. Euros are accepted for purchases.

    Relax and soak up the spectacular scenery as a leisurely drive introduces you to the beautiful island of Faial, often referred to as the Blue Island due to the vast amount of hydrangeas that bloom here during the summer months. As you wind your way around the island, you’ll pass the typical Azorean villages of Ribeira Funda and Norte Pequeno, before heading to Capelinhos.

    The Capelinhos volcanic eruption occurred in 1957, rising from the sea and remaining active for 13 months. This natural phenomenon is one of the most remarkable volcanoes in the world and a significant part of the island’s history. Today, the site houses a wonderful Interpretative Centre which depicts the story of the volcanic eruption as well as the geological history of the Azores.

    Round off your tour with a stop at the 4 Star Hotel do Canal. Sit back and relax with refreshments of tea, coffee and pastries and marvel at the breathtaking views over the bay.


    This excursion will operate by coach and on foot. Please note that views are dependent on weather conditions on the day. There is a short walk of approximately ten minutes at the Capelinhos Volcano area, over uneven ground. The visit to the Interpretative Centre is non-guided and therefore the amount of walking required is at guests’ discretion.

    Whale & Dolphin Watching

    Seeing whales and dolphins in their natural habitat is a most thrilling sight, and these beautiful creatures will inspire adventurers’ young and old. Journey out to the vicinity of the island of Fayal where your tour begins.

    The Azores attracts 24 species of cetaceans with Sperm Whales being the most common. Other whales that visit include the Humpback, Minky, Blue, Sei, Northern Bottlenose Whales and the Sowerby’s Beaked Whale. Regular encounters are made with the Pilot Whale, Orca Whale and Pseudorca Whale, as well as the Common, Bottlenose, Risso’s and Striped Dolphin.

    Prior to setting off, you will be given a short briefing by one of the whale-watching experts. The crew on board are available during your excursion to answer any questions you may have on marine life and the rich history of the Azores.

    Explore the coast around the beautiful islands of the Azores and enjoy the calm and tranquillity of these lush green islands as you go in search of these fascinating mammals.


    This excursion is conducted by boat and on foot. There is a ten minute walk to the whale-watching base from the ship. This tour is not suitable for those who suffer with seasickness. Due to the swells that can be experienced in the area, it is recommended that all guests should take seasickness tablets with them as a precaution. This tour is dependent on weather conditions. Animal sightings are not guaranteed. Due to the nature of this tour, it is recommended that guests who are pregnant do not participate.

  • Caldeira & Capelinhos Volcano

    Admire the ‘Blue Island’, named because of its profusion of pretty blue hydrangeas and visit the impressive Capelinhos Volcano.

    The belvedere at Espalamaca, is the perfect place to look out towards the port and the charming old town of Horta. You’ll also be able to see the islands of Pico, Sao Jorge and Graciosa, which make up part of the Archipelago.

    Ascend 3,000 feet to the centre of the island to inspect the vast volcanic crater known as Caldeira. Considered as one of the major attractions of the island, it is over a mile in diameter and 1,200 feet deep, and is surrounded by exuberant vegetation.

    Continuing westwards, you’ll pass the typical Azorean villages of Ribeira Funda, Praia do Norte and Norte Pequeno, from where there is a magnificent view of Capelinhos, the volcano which rose from the sea in 1957. The volcano is now extinct, but you will see the effects of its devastating eruption.

    You’ll return along the south coast of this hydrangea-filled, windmill-dotted island, through Capelo and Castel Branco.

    During this tour, a short comfort stop will be made at a local café bar where refreshments can be purchased if required.

    Capture the beauty of Horta during a 4x4 jeep tour around the island.

    Embark on a fun-filled journey by 4x4 jeep, pausing at some of the island’s most beautiful spots.

    At Espalamaca Belvedere, take in the wonderful views of Horta town and on a clear day, the neighbouring islands of Pico, Sáo. Jorge and Graciosa.

    Continuing by 4x4, you’ll ascend 3,000 feet to the centre of the island to view the vast volcanic crater; Caldeira. At over 3,000 feet high, you’ll have sweeping views of the crater blanketed in lush greenery. Afterwards, a stop will be made at Capelinhos to see the effect of the devastating volcanic eruption which rose from the sea in 1957.

    Your return journey to the ship takes you along the coast via the popular summer resort of Varadouro.
