Alghero, Sardinia - Mediterranean Cruises

The old port of Alghero has a distinctive Catalan feel – dubbed as "Little Barcelona" by its 14th century rulers. Alghero’s strong Catalan influences are revealed through its old fortifications, notably in the church of San Francesco with its colourful dome and gothic bell tower. The legacy extends to menus too, as paella features prominently amongst the charming collection of bars and restaurants, dotted around the cobbled streets.

Excursions

  • Sardinian Sampler

Sample delightful scenery, local wines and delicacies as you acquaint yourself with the charms of Sardinia.

    Sardinian Sampler

Take a scenic drive along the Riviera del Coarallo, famous for its red coral, before reaching the headland of Capo Caccia. Enjoy the scenery from this lookout point where the coastline stretches out in front of you and the cliffs plummet to the surfy waters below. You may also catch a glimpse of the lighthouse and far below at sea level, the famous Caves of Neptune.

During the second millennium BC the first nuraghi appeared, dotted across the Sardinian countryside like giant upturned stone buckets. You’ll visit the site of Nuraghe Palmavera, where you can see the interesting architectural remains.

Visit the Leda d’Ittiri Winery, one of Italy’s most outstanding wine estates located at the feet of Monte Doglia. From this mountain it is possible to admire the bay of Porto Conte and the promontory of Capo Caccia. The estate consists of 18 hectares of olive orchards and vineyards that are carefully cultivated by the owners as if they were the garden of their farmhouse.

During your visit to Leda D’itteri Winery, you’ll be offered samples of the local Sardinian wine along with typical Sardinian snacks.

This excursion will operate by coach and on foot. There is approximately 30 minutes of walking on this tour. Flat, comfortable shoes are recommended. The order of this tour may vary.

  • Panoramic & Folklore

See the sights and enjoy the sounds of a regional folk dance whilst sampling some delightful local produce.

    Panoramic & Folklore

Sit back and relax as the sights of north east Sardinia unfold before you. Your panoramic drive takes you along the rugged Capocaccia coastline, past the ancient Nuraghe Palmavera with its intriguing small stone ruins, to the headland of Capo caccia. Enjoy a brief photographic stop to capture the views along the cliffs and the pounding waves below.

The highlight of your tour will be a visit to the small 'Agriturismo' country house of Le Pinnette. A rustic atmosphere pervades Le Pinnette, and you will be entertained with a wonderful local folk dance performance. During your stay at Le Pinnette, savour refreshments of Sardinian snacks and local wine will be served.

You return to Alghero along the same route, allowing you to enjoy the scenery once more.

This excursion will operate by coach and on foot. Although there is little walking involved during this tour, guests must be able to negotiate the steps onto and off the coach, uneven ground at the photographic stop and at La Pinette farm.

  • Bosa & Wine

Discover the charms of the southern coastal town of Bosa and sample the famous Malvasia wine.

    Bosa & Wine

Journey by coach along the dramatic winding coastal road towards Bosa. Situated at the mouth of the River Temo, the town of Bosa has an atmospheric old quarter located at the foot of a hill, which is dominated by the medieval Castle of Serravalle.

Bosa is the centre for the production of olive oils and wines (‘Malvasia’ is particularly famous) and is also well known for lace and ‘filigrana’. Bosa is also a traditional fishing village bisected by the River Temo, Sardinia's only navigable river.

Your walking tour will take you along the waterfront promenade, passing the fisherman’s two and three story houses with their red tiled roofs. Continue past the church and along the quaint narrow lanes of this medieval town.

Afterwards, you’ll have a chance to sample the typical Malvasia wine at a local café in Bosa.

Relax as your return journey to Alghero takes you back along the same scenic route.

This excursion will operate by coach and on foot. This tour involves approximately 1½ hours of walking over steep, inclined and cobblestoned surfaces. Flat, comfortable shoes are recommended.

  • Alghero & Castelsardo

A combination of spectacular scenery; the intriguing Iberian charm of Alghero and the quaint, walled hill town of Castelsardo.

    Alghero & Castelsardo

The little city of ancient Alghero today conserves a look of a typical coastal town - unplanned, with narrow and twisting streets. The old town barely covers one-tenth of todays city, but is a delight to explore on foot. Discover Alghero's ancient Catalan origins as your guide takes you on a fascinating walking tour of the town.

Overlooking the wide Gulf of Asinara, from an elevated site, Castelsardo has a truly picturesque aspect. Here, you will see a Gothic mixture of well-preserved ancient walls and characteristic narrow streets and steps. Dominated by an ancient castle and an imposing girdle of walls, the centre still preserves much of the essence of simple old town life.

Products of the local artisans can be found brimming from the numerous shops in Castelsardo. Keep an eye out for the typical baskets woven by the locals.

A Sardinian-style luncheon will be served whilst you are entertained by local Sardinian folk-music.

During the journey, you will pass the trachytic mass, Elephant's Rock, resembling a reclining elephant.

This excursion will operate by coach and on foot. This tour involves approximately one hour of walking over steep, inclined and cobblestoned surfaces. Flat, comfortable shoes are recommended. Interior visits of the church will not be possible when services are taking place. Guests are advised to take care when crossing the road at Elephant's Rock. The order of this tour may vary.
