  • Best of Antigua

Capture the wonderful views from Shirley Heights and the Block House Ruins and then explore historic Nelson’s Dockyard.

    Best of Antigua

At an elevated position 446 feet above the sea on a sheer cliff, you will find the Block House Ruins. From here, you will have amazing views over Indian Creek and the Atlantic Ocean. Block House was the principal lookout and officers’ barracks for the First West India Regiment back in 1787

Shirley Heights, named after Sir Thomas Shirley, was the principal fortification of the British fleet stationed at English Harbour. The view from Shirley Heights is stunning, taking in virtually the entire east coast of Antigua.

Nelson’s Dockyard is one of the largest attractions in the eastern Caribbean, and the last remaining Georgian naval dockyard still in use today. Explore the Admiral’s Inn, museum, mystery pillars, art gallery and bakery. Admire the sleek yachts tied to the old stone quayside and soak up the unique atmosphere.

A farewell refreshment of fruit or rum punch will be provided at the 18th century Inn at Nelson’s Dockyard.

This excursion will be by minibus. To derive full enjoyment from this tour, there is some walking involved, including steps and uneven ground. Comfortable, flat, walking shoes are recommended. The tour duration may vary depending on local traffic conditions on the day.

A perfect combination that captures both the landmark sights and coast of Antigua.

    Antigua Sights and Coastal Cruise

Setting off from the port, you will take a scenic drive to Nelsons Dockyard. Built in 1725, the Dockyard served as the base for the English naval squadron patrolling the West Indies. Upon arrival, enjoy a short informative guided walking tour through the Dockyard, followed by some limited free time.

Afterwards, you will continue to Dow's Hill Interpretation Centre at Shirley Heights. Here, a 15 minute multimedia presentation will be shown that traces the island's history from past to present day. You will also head up to the former signal station, Shirley Heights Lookout, for a picture perfect view of Nelson's Dockyard and English Harbour.

Your journey will then take you through Fig Tree Drive and onto Jolly Harbour, where your catamaran awaits. Here, you will embark on a leisurely cruise back along the coast to St John’s. Starting with a cooling swim in a cove, where the catamaran will drop anchor, you can then sit back and relax and take in the lovely views as you pass by some of the many beaches that Antigua is renowned for. Take this wonderful opportunity to swim and snorkel with magnificent stingrays in their natural environment.

    Stingray Sensation

Take a brief bus ride across Antigua’s rugged countryside to reach the land-base. You will have a chance to change before a thrilling eight-minute skiff ride out to the stingrays.

With your snorkel gear, you will enter the water from the floating platforms. The waters on the sand bar are between four and six feet, ideal for everyone to enjoy the stingrays. See the graceful creatures glide through the clear waters; you may even want to feed them under the instruction of your guide. The resident rays are quite used to the people in their environment. Stingrays have incredible suction power, which you may feel when feeding them. Although stingrays possess a barb on their tails, they only use this if threatened.

Back on dry land; enjoy a refreshing rum or fruit punch whilst browsing the digital photographs of your adventure.

    ACTIVITY EXCURSIONS
You and all those in your party should be aware that, in undertaking activity excursions, you will be involved in a degree of physical exertion and/or activity such as hiking, biking, snorkelling, kayaking, diving etc. By booking the excursion you confirm that you and all those in your party are in good physical and mental condition, with no history of conditions such as seizures, dizziness, fainting, heart condition, respiratory problems or back/neck problems (by way of example only). You should also ensure that no one in your party is taking medicine that carries a warning about impairment of physical or mental abilities. If you are pregnant this type of excursion may not be appropriate for you. It is your responsibility to ensure that you are fit and well enough to take part in the activities booked and you are reminded to take care for your own safety. Because of the risks associated with activity excursions, you may be asked by the excursion provider to sign a document which may affect or limit the excursion provider’s liability. Comfortable flat walking shoes are recommended.

    BEACH/WATER RELATED EXCURSIONS
For any excursion involving water, guests are reminded to exercise particular care. Alcohol and eating a full meal should be avoided before swimming. If buoyancy aids are provided for an activity they must be worn at all times. You should bear in mind that the sea is unpredictable. Lifeguards are unlikely to be present and there may not be a flag system to indicate whether or not it is safe to go in the water. In addition, beach activities may not be supervised or accompanied and so you should take care to satisfy yourself as to the safety of the beach and/or the sea at the time of your excursion. Please exercise caution when entering the sea as the seabed and aquatic environment is capable of springing surprises and we have not inspected the beach or seabed for its safety. Children must be supervised by you at all times near water. All activities on the beach, water and in the sea are undertaken at your own risk. You’ll need to take swimwear, a towel, sunscreen and flat shoes that can be worn in the water.

    LIABILITY
Cunard will arrange for the excursions to be performed by the relevant excursion provider. Cunard does not provide or supply the excursion services. Cunard will exercise reasonable care and skill in the selection of the excursion provider, but will not in any circumstances have a greater liability than the excursion supplier and Cunard shall not be responsible for the negligent acts/omissions of the excursion supplier. Please note that in relation to all excursions Cunard is not responsible or liable for any loss, damage, or injury sustained by you unless such loss, damage or injury arises out of a breach of legal duty of Cunard.

    TRAVEL INSURANCE
Before booking any activity excursions it is essential that you ensure your travel insurance extends to cover the specified activity. It is your responsibility to obtain adequate insurance.
