  • Wonders of the Atlantic Ocean

Gain a fascinating insight into the underwater world of the Atlantic Ocean.

    Wonders of the Atlantic Ocean

The Atlantic Sea Park is one of Europe’s largest saltwater aquariums. The facility is built into the coastline and offers views of the coastal islands and the ocean. The exhibition area includes 11 large landscape aquariums, two open touch pools, a penguin park, two activity pools and several smaller aquariums. The largest tank, containing seven million pints of seawater, is the setting for the daily dive shows which can be viewed clearly through its large acrylic observation panels.

Together the aquariums provide a representative view of the underwater life which inhabits the Norwegian coast and the northern Atlantic Ocean. Species from various ocean depths are on display, including marine life from deep water habitats.

This excursion will operate by coach. Atlantic Sea Park is mostly wheelchair accessible with the exception of the amphitheatre, which has four steps to access it. There are toilets, a café and souvenir shop on site. Please remember to take local currency (Norwegian Kroner) or a credit card for any additional purchases.

  • Old Town Porvoo

See the main highlights of Helsinki before heading into the countryside to the delightful town of Porvoo.

    Old Town Porvoo

Helsinki boasts a wealth of stunning architecture, and Carl Ludwig's neo-classical Senate Square is one of the most graceful squares in Europe. Enjoy a panoramic tour of city before heading out to discover Finland's second oldest town - charming Porvoo.

The City of Porvoo originated as a trading hub for Porvoo Parish inhabitants at the point where the sea meets the Porvoonjoki River. The town was named after the ancient fortress Borgå, the Swedish name for Porvoo, and was granted town rights by Swedish King Magnus Eriksson in 1346. Old Porvoo is one of the treasures of Finland, and the town looks the same as it did during the middle ages.

The town has lovingly-preserved a section of the old part of the city and a guided walk through this area will take you over cobbled streets, past weathered wooden houses, the town hall and the main square.

Enjoy some welcome refreshments at the Haikko Manor House before returning to Helsinki.

This excursion will operate by coach and on foot. This tour involves walking over uneven and gravelled ground. The order of sites may vary.

  • Sights and Sounds of Bergen

See the main sights of Bergen followed by a piano recital of Grieg's music in the inspiring surroundings of his home.

    Sights and Sounds of Bergen

See the old medieval city, including the 13th-century King Håkon's Hall, the 16th-century Rosenkrantz Tower, and Bryggen, a major trading centre for the medieval Hanseatic League. Pass the open-air fish market at Torget and Grieg Hall, the city's concert hall. Enjoy the surrounding sights of green slopes and ragged mountains as you drive through suburbs, with well kept houses and gardens, to Troldhaugen.

Troldhaugen, beautifully situated at the Nordås Lake, was home to the late Edvard Grieg. Grieg (1843-1907) was a composer, pianist and conductor with his first piano debut being at the age of 18. Norwegian folk music, nature and the delightful scenery of Norway inspired him to create the most beautiful pieces of music.

A special piano recital in the ‘Troldsal’, a unique style concert hall with turf roof, will immerse you in the exquisite sounds of Grieg's music. After the recital, there will be a guided tour of Grieg’s house and gardens where you will see many of the original furnishings including a Steinway grand piano, which was an anniversary gift in 1892. Before departing Troldhaugen, there will be the opportunity to visit the information centre which sells books, CD’s and other Grieg memorabilia.

This excursion will operate by coach and on foot. There is a total of 30 minutes' walking with some steps and gravel terrain. Photography is not permitted inside the house. If the ship is berthed at Dokken or Jekteviken Pier the journey will include a tunnel.

  • Stavanger Sights & Black Gold

Discover the interesting sights, striking scenery and fascinating heritage of the charming city of Stavanger.

    Stavanger Sights & Black Gold

From the port, a short drive will bring you to Ullandshaug Viewpoint for magnificent views of Hafrsfjord and the surrounding area. Hafrsfjord is where the Kingdom of Norway was founded in 872 after the Viking King, Harald Hårfagre, defeated the last of the regional princes and united the 29 small kingdoms under one crown. Nearby at Møllebukta, you’ll stop to see the Three Giant Swords monument which commemorate this battle and symbolise the fight is over.

As Stavanger is considered to be the most important ‘oil city’ in Norway, no visit would be complete without visiting the entertaining state-of-the-art Norwegian Oil Museum. Its unusual architecture has already made it a main landmark in Stavanger. The museum cleverly manages to tell the story of oil and how it is created, discovered and produced, in a very interesting and informative way using audio-visual aids, models, interactive exhibits and an amusing 3D dinosaur movie. Discover how oil is used in our everyday life for more than just fuel and learn the challenges facing the North Sea Divers.

On the return journey, a stop will be made at the quaint old town of Gamle Stavanger (Old Stavanger). You’ll have the option to take a short guided walk along the picturesque narrow cobbled lanes and past the well preserved wooden houses as you listen to tales of the bygone ages.

Discover the scenery and history of the ‘Viking saga islands’ of Giske and Godøy.

    Island Discovery

The municipality of Giske consists of four islands; Giske, Godøy, Vigra and Valderay, which were the centre of power during the Viking Age and the Middle Ages. It was also the seat of earls, local kings and Viking chieftains. Your journey will take you through a series of tunnels and bridges to the two main islands of Giske and Godøy.

From Alesund, you will travel across the Giske Bridge to the saga island of Giske, the birthplace of the Viking chieftain, Rollo. The municipality was named after this small island because of its historical importance. Giske is fairly flat and fertile with some settlements dating back to the early Bronze Age. • Ålesund Heritage Walk

A walk through the heart of Ålesund reveals a charming and colourful town, renowned for its unique Art Nouveau style.

    Ålesund Heritage Walk

The colourful buildings, decorations and turrets of Ålesund, look as though they belong in a fairytale book. The town was entirely rebuilt in this Art Nouveau style, following a devastating fire in 1904. Its extravagantly decorated buildings have been sympathetically preserved to present a townscape like no other. Elaborate façades embellished with dragons, flowers and human forms are topped by a forest of spires and turrets, combining native Norwegian elements with continental Jugend-style.

As you stroll around this truly unique Norwegian town, your guide will provide an interesting commentary and explain the town’s strong maritime traditions. Arriving at the lovely harbour area of Brosundet, you will be able to see examples of the picturesque Jugend-style houses that have made Ålesund famous.

From the harbour, the walk continues uphill to the attractive little park at the foot of Mount Aksla, with its famous viewpoint. Here, exotic trees and plants thrive despite their northerly location. There will be free time to walk up part of Mount Aksla and enjoy the spectacular views over Ålesund and the harbour. Or you may choose to sit or stroll in the park and enjoy the refreshing mountain air before returning to the ship.

This excursion will operate on foot. There is approximately two hours of walking including some steep inclines. Comfortable enclosed, walking shoes and a jacket are recommended. The optional walk up part of Mount Aksla involves 418 steps and is unaccompanied.
