    Italian Countryside & Catacombs

Upon arrival in Rome you will visit the Catacombs, a curious underground maze of tunnels where the early Christians, persecuted by the Romans, practiced their religion in secret. In the Roman Hills lies a wealth of beautiful countryside.

You will follow the Appian Way, which runs along one of the first ancient Roman military roads into the campagna (countryside) dotted with farmhouses, villas and palaces.

In Rome’s wine-growing hinterland, you will stop at the Monte Due Torri farmhouse, which is located in the Albani Hills. A member of the household will greet you and will lead you on a tour of the property. Upon entering the home you will be invited to assist in the preparation of the meal. Take in the highlights of Civitavecchia’s historical town on this interesting snapshot tour and music recital.

    Civitavecchia and Italian Music Recital

Civitavecchia meaning ‘old city’ is one of the largest ports in Italy and is just 70km from Rome. Here, there are remains of the Port of Traiano and the city of Centumcellae that was conquered by the Saracens in the year 828 and transformed into a military base.

After a short transfer by shuttle bus, you’ll arrive at the famous Michelangelo's Fortress, where your walking tour will begin. Stroll along the Marina Grande to the Ghetto district, the oldest part of the city. The name derives from the presence of the buildings earmarked for Jewish families, but Jewish people never lived there because the houses were occupied by families of fishermen. Pass by the Theatre and the market place to reach the walls of the city near Piazza Aurelio Saffi to see the Church of the Orazione. After a short walk, you’ll cross the arch to Piazza Leandra, right in the historical centre, where you find the Church of the Star, famous because this religious building is the starting point of all the processions and religious rites of Civitavecchia.

Your last stop will be at the Cittadella of the Music where you’ll enjoy a 30 minute concert consisting of typical Italian music, including some pieces from famous operas, the Italian Belcanto and Roman and Neapolitan songs.

Return to the ship by shuttle bus or remain in the city centre to explore independently.

This excursion will operate by shuttle bus and on foot. This tour is predominately on foot over cobbled, uneven and inclined surfaces. Flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended.

  • Ostia Antica

Explore the magnificent ancient city of Ostia Antica and admire the beautifully preserved Roman ruins.

    Ostia Antica

Founded by King Anco Marzio around the 4th century BC, Ostia Antica was Rome’s main commercial port and military base, with a population at its peak of nearly 100,000 inhabitants. Barbarian invasions and malaria led to the decline of city and eventually all the inhabitants abandoned it. Buried for centuries by sand, the city is remarkably well-preserved and, although maybe less spectacular than Pompeii or Herculaneum, it gives a more complete picture of the life in the Roman Empire.

Your visit starts at Via delle Tombe, which leads to the Porta Romana - one of the city’s 3 gates. This is the beginning of Decumanus Maximus, the main road through the town. From the Neptune and Amphitride Baths, you’ll walk to the theatre built by Agrippa and to the Forum, which once formed the centre of the city. Discover the main public buildings - the Capitolium and the Temple of Rome and Augustus.

There are no fewer than 18 temples dedicated to the Persian God Mithras, as well as a Jewish Synagogue dating from the 1st century BC and a Christian basilica. See the House of Diana and the Termopolium, an ancient Roman bar, with a marble counter and a fresco representing the fruits and foodstuffs that were sold there. After this fascinating stroll through the past, re-board your coach to return to Civitavecchia.

This excursion operates by coach and on foot. There is a considerable amount of walking on this tour, over uneven ground and cobblestones. Please wear flat, comfortable shoes; bring a hat, sunscreen and water. This tour does not operate on Mondays.
