    Explore the well-preserved Nature Reserve of Monte Arcosu on this jeep adventure.

    Depart the pier in your 4x4 jeep towards the nature reserve of Monte Arcosu, located in the mountainous region of south west Sardinia.

    Along the way, you’ll pass Santa Gilla Ponds, one of the protected wetland areas that surround Cagliari. Enjoy a photo stop here to admire the pink flamingos and many other species of birds.

    Monte Arcosu is a nature reserve situated within the municipality of Uta. The reserve was acquired by the WWF in 1984, in order to preserve the splendid holm-oak forests present in this territory.

    During a guided trek, you’ll walk through paths enriched by beautiful and fragrant vegetation and may even be lucky enough to spot a Sardinian deer. This wildlife haven is the habitat of deer, boar, hare, wild cat and other species, such as partridge and golden eagle.

    At the end of your short trek, enjoy some time to relax with some Sardinian snacks and refreshments, before the return journey to Cagliari.

  • Poetto Beach Transfer

    Located on the outskirts of Cagliari, Poetto Beach has more than six miles of white, sandy beach, facing the Gulf of the Angels.

    After a short drive, you’ll arrive at the beach and have time at leisure to swim in the Sardinian blue sea or relax on a sunbed at the Lido Ottagono, a seaside resort situated at the heart of Poetto Beach.

    This beach is regarded by many as Sardinia’s finest. Lined with kiosks and cafés, you may chose to purchase some light refreshments to quench your thirst while you soak up the Mediterranean rays.



    BEACH/WATER RELATED EXCURSIONS
    For any excursion involving water, guests are reminded to exercise particular care. Alcohol and eating a full meal should be avoided before swimming.     Enjoy a short orientation drive through the city of Cagliari, stopping at the Church of Bonaira, to learn about the history of the church and to admire the views over Cagliari from a vantage point.

    Continue onto Monte Urpino, for a brief photograph opportunity, commanding spectacular views of the Gulf of Angels, the salt ponds and the Molentargius Lagoon, a safe harbour to the splendid pink flamingos.

    You’ll continue your drive crossing the Santa Gilla ponds and onto La Locanda di Baccalamanza, a stunning vineyard set in an estate stretching over 26 hectares, with breathtaking views over the gulf of Cagliari.     Your excursion begins with a fascinating orientation tour of Cagliari. You’ll pause for a brief photo stop at the Nostra Signora Bonaria church which attracts millions of Christian pilgrims each year. Your tour guide will explain the church’s history before you continue on your way up the slopes of Mount Urpino.

    Then it’s on towards Serdiana and your visit to Cantine Argiolas. This famous farm is a genuine success story that started back in 1918 when Francesco Argiolas started from scratch and planted the first vineyard with the assistance of war prisoners. The farm’s fortunes realty began to flourish when Antonio Argiolas took over and began running the farm as a business. Antonio thought laterally and evolved the business through technological innovation in the cellars. He chose one of Italy's leading oenologists, Giacomo Tachis, who joined forces with oenologist Mariano Murru. Now, three generations of the family run the business together - the patriarch Antonio, his two sons and his grandchildren.

    You’ll tour this fascinating estate and, after a delicious wine tasting, re-board your coach to return to Cagliari.

    Step back in time and walk in the footsteps of medieval Sardinians on this fascinating historical tour.

    You’ll board your bus at the port and make your way across the lush, green plains of Campidano. Along the way, you’ll drive through some of Sardinia’s most stunning scenery, passing through vast fields of grain crops and wide-open vineyards.

    Your destination is the town of San Luri – the capital of Southern Sardinia since 2005, and once home to ancient saints, kings and nobles. San Luri is one of the most important towns in the new province of Medio. It is most famous for its breathtaking medieval castle, which was built by the Pisans and refurbished in the current shape by Pietro IV from Aragona in 1355. The Spanish king considered San Luri as the gateway to the kingdom of Sardinia and Corsica.

    You’ll visit the San Luri Castle, the only fully-intact castle in Sardinia. It is located within an enclosed fortress, enclosed and has imposing walls as high as 4.5 metres, built as a defense against invading forces. 15 towers stand sentinel around the 16 hectare site, guarding the entrances to the fortress.

    At the end of the tour of the Castle, you’ll re-board your coach and return to Cagliari.

    After a scenic 90 minute drive from Cagliari, you’ll reach the reach the glorious beach of Tuerredda. It’s situated in a breathtaking inlet between Capo Malfatano and Capo Spartivento, and is widely considered to be one of Sardinia’s most beautiful beaches. When you first spot its fine, light-coloured sand and transparent waters, you’ll soon see why. Some say it’s reminiscent of a typical Caribbean beachscapes. The scene from the beach itself, looking out over the water is truly amazing. Taking centre-stage is the charming islet of Tuerredda, just a few hundred metres from the beach.

    If you’re a strong swimmer, why not swim out to the islet and stretch out on its warm sands or soak up some sun on its smooth rocks. If you venture inland you’ll discover ground-hugging brush, home to seagulls and other birdlife. Swim back to the main beach and enjoy a refreshment or snack before heading back to the port.

  • Ancient Sardinia

    A visit to the ancient city of Nora is a must for those who enjoy delving into rich archaeological sites.

    Enjoy a scenic drive through the town of Cagliari and up to Monte Urpinu. You’ll then continue along the south-western coast of Sardinia, the same route taken by thousands of pilgrims every year as they follow the Santo’Efisio Cart. You’ll pass the Santa Gilla Lagoon, to glimpse the pink flamingos in the distance.

    Founded under Carthaginian rule, the ancient city of Nora was built on a spit of land jutting out to sea. The town became the island’s most important city, a role it continued to enjoy under the Romans. Still partly submerged by the sea, the city was excavated at the beginning of the last century, revealing its ancient origins. Admire the 400 year old Spanish watchtower, the massive public bath system, splendid mosaics and a theatre almost intact after nearly 20 centuries. You’ll also have an opportunity to see the Roman Theatre and the Punic Temple of Ashmun.

    After your visit to the archaeological site, you’ll have some free time to admire the coastal surroundings and beach. Relax and purchase a drink or an ice cream at the nearby café, before the return journey to Cagliari.

    Enjoy a drive up to Monte Urpinu, where you can look back at the old city, dominated by the Cathedral, and across to the area of Molentargius Salinas, known for its exotic birdlife.

    En route to Maracalagonis, you’ll have views of Poetto Beach, the most popular beach in Cagliari.

    Maracalagonis is a farming community situated approximately 15 miles from Cagliari, at the foot of the Fratelli Mountains. Herds of wild boar and rare Sardinian deer can still be found here in the mountains. The local people in this region still retain many age-old traditions. You’ll spend time at a typical country house, where you’ll be welcomed by the owners and made to feel at home in the courtyard setting. Dancers in traditional Sardinian dress will perform folk dances for your entertainment.

    You’ll also have the chance to sample some delightful Sardinian refreshments of wine and cookies, prepared according to traditional recipes, whilst you enjoy local music and dances.

An awning and trees around the courtyard will provide some shade during the folk dance performance, however you may wish to take sun protection, a hat and insect repellent.   • World Heritage Site of Barumini

    A fascinating tour to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Barumini, with its mystical nuragic archaeological site.

    You’ll depart from the port in a comfortable coach bound for Barumini. En route, you’ll make a brief photo stop at the famous pilgrimage site of Nostra Signora Bonaria church before making your way up Mount Urpino for breath-taking panoramic views of Cagliari and the picturesque Poetto Beach.

    Next, it’s onto Barumini where you’ll will visit megalithic Nuraghic complex of Su Nuraxi. This UNESCO World Heritage Site was re-discovered 1950. It consists of circular defensive towers in the form of truncated cones built of stone, with corbel-vaulted internal chambers. Historians believe the fortification was strengthened around 500 BC when the Nuraghic Civilization became aware of the Carthaginian threat. This is the finest and most complete example of prehistoric architecture on the island.

    One thing’s for certain – after visiting this ancient place, you’re bound to leave with unforgettable memories and perhaps a few theories of your own!

    Board your coach at the port and head for Barumini and Casa Zapata. Although it’s listed as a museum, it’s actually three museums in one, all housed in the grounds and structures of a fine historical mansion – the Palazzo Zapata. In their entirety, the three collections are a historical museum, an ethnographic museum and an archaeological museum. The manor house came into being when the noble Zapata family elected to establish its baronial residence in Barumini, building the Palazzo residence in the 16th and 17th centuries. There are catwalks and ramps for easy walking.

    Follow your guide and explore well-preserved 17th century life and ancient Sardinian traditions.

    Afterwards, you’ll go on a short, scenic walk to the Olianas estate. This is home to Sardinia’s first ever bio-integral winery. The owners have gradually developed a form of ethical agriculture where environmental protection takes top priority. At Olinas, you’ll have the chance to sample the winery’s varieties and enjoy a traditional Sardinian snack before re-boarding the bus and heading back to the port in Cagliari.

    Acquaint yourself with Sardinia on a short drive through the city of Cagliari to the Basilica of Bonaira, where a stop will be made at a vantage point to admire the view over Cagliari. Your guide will introduce you to their culture and the fascinating history of the church.

    Continue onto Monte Urpino, for a brief photograph opportunity commanding spectacular views of the Gulf of Angels, the salt ponds and the Molentargius Lagoon, a safe harbour to the splendid pink flamingos.

    You’ll continue your drive to visit a local wine cellar for your wine tasting experience. Awaken your senses with a tasting of locally produced wines and sample a medley of delicious Sardinian cheese, salami, olives and bread.

    Returning to Cagliari city centre, you’ll have approximately 45 minutes of free time to explore this bustling city, before returning to the ship.

    Discover the long and interesting history of the island’s capital city of Cagliari, one of Sardinia’s busiest ports.

    Your tour begins with a drive up to Monte Urpinu. The view from here embraces the city and the harbour on one side and the saltworks and Poetto Beach on the other.

    A visit to the Santa-Maria Cathedral will show you a combination of Pisan, Aragonese and Baroque features. Four lions guard the entrance and the inside Baroque decoration consists of multi-coloured marble and fine sculptures.

    Afterwards, you’ll have time to visit the National Archaeological Museum. This museum traces the history of Sardinia, with exhibits from the Neolithic, Phoenician and Roman periods. Look out for the fascinating statuettes from the Bronze Age, as well as jewellery, coloured glass heads and terracotta votive statuettes found at sites around Cagliari.

    After your visit to the museum, you’ll have some free time in Via Roma to purchase a coffee or ice cream and browse for souvenirs of your visit to Sardinia.

    This tour will operate by coach and on foot. This tour involves approximately 1½ to 2 hours’ walking over some cobbled and uneven surfaces, including steps and steep inclines. Modest dress is required when entering the Cathedral, shorts are not acceptable. Guests are reminded to take local currency to purchase drinks or to use the toilet facilities in the cafés. Shops and cafés may be closed in the afternoon and on Sundays.
