Belize City cruises

Considered an American and a Caribbean nation, English-speaking Belize lies on the eastern side of Central America with Guatemala and Mexico as neighbours. Rectangular in shape, the country is just 174 miles long by 62 miles across. The capital, Belize City, mixes its world-famous, mystical Mayan heritage with an exciting Creole culture. You will encounter tasty food and lively music in the streets of this seaside city all year-round.

The diverse landscape of marshland, savannah, jungle and the Caribbean Sea surrounding Belize City gives visitors a guaranteed fascination factor in every direction. Just 34 miles away, discover the ruins of Altun Ha, two ceremonial plazas, with many temples excavated in the 1960s. Birders can see the national toucan and admire hundreds of migrating species, including five kinds of native kingfisher and the scarlet macaw, at the Crooked Tree wildlife sanctuary. Trek into verdant jungles, home to jaguars, green iguanas, spider and howler monkeys, for a rainforest experience you’ll remember forever.

Visit one of the first Mayan sites to be excavated in Belize, in a beautiful location close to the Guatemalan border.

    Xunantunich Mayan Ruins

The Mayan ceremonial centre of Xunantunich, meaning ‘stone woman’, is spectacularly perched on a natural limestone ridge, providing a panoramic view of the hilly Cayo district. A museum has been built on site at the entrance of the centre, providing an introductory history and display of the ruins.

After your visit, enjoy a traditional local lunch in San Ignacio, followed by some time for shopping before returning to Belize City.

The drive to Xunantunich is approximately 2 hours, and parts of the journey may be on bumpy roads. The ferry crossing is a 5 minute journey, on a manually swung ferry. This tour involves up to 1 hour of walking over flat and slightly inclined terrain, which may be uneven in places.

    Belize Zoo & City

Over one hundred species of wildlife, all indigenous to Belize, have found a perfect home at the Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Centre. The centre aims to bring the people of Belize closer to the animals that they share their country with, in the hope that they will then protect these special resources for future generations. The magnificent mammals include jaguars, margay and oceleot, as well as birds such as toucans, king vultures and harpy eagles. You will also find iguanas, Crocodiles, boa constrictors and coral snake. After a guided tour around the Zoo, there will be time to visit the souvenir gift shop.

    Altun Ha & Belize

Sit back and relax, as you drive through the city of Belize, passing by the beautiful landmarks and old British colonial buildings mixed with modern architecture. Then, you’ll head along the Northern Highway to the Altun Ha ruins.

Three plazas and 13 structures mark the epicentre of this significant ceremonial site, known as the Maya of Mesoamerica. Altun Ha was said to have been a key trade and religious centre in the ancient world, believed to have accommodated about 10,000 people.

The most extensively excavated of all the Mayan sites in Belize, Altun Ha is located just seven miles from the sea and surrounded by primary broadleaf rainforest. Visit the incredible temples and tombs where many interesting and unique artefacts have been uncovered. Possibly the most famous of all Altun Ha’s finds was a 9½ pound jade head of the Sun God, Kinich Ahau, found in the tomb of a royal priest within the main temple.

Stone steps allow you to climb to the top of three of the main temples, where these ancient vantage points afford magnificent views over the surrounding forests and Mayan plazas.
