Central America
The countries of Central America are bursting with colour and life. From whale watching on Mexico’s Pacific side through Guatemala, Panama and Costa Rica to the jungles of Belize on the Caribbean Sea, every stop is an explorer’s paradise.
Wildlife lovers know the biodiversity of Central America and its rainforests filled with exotic, colourful creatures is unbeatable. Home to thousands of birds, neon frogs and other rare and endangered species, you can enjoy rainforest expeditions inland and swim with turtles in warm, pristine waters. The tiny country of Belize, about the size of Wales, is one of Sir David Attenborough’s favourite locations. From Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala, explore the lost temples of Tikal. Try river rafting or horse-back riding in Costa Rica’s Puerto Limon. Look out for perezosos (`lazies’), the sloths who live high up in the tree canopy, sleeping for 20 hours a day.
Echoes of the indigenous people meet elements of Afro-Caribbean culture, and the influence of Columbus and Europeans who bequeathed such enduring things as the Spanish siesta remains evident everywhere. Trek to ancient mysterious Mayan temples, visit historic forts and browse fascinating museums to learn of the how these lands came by so many legends, languages and leaders.
The dominant language of Central America is Spanish. English is widely spoken throughout the Caribbean coast and is the official language of Belize. Guatemala has 20 Maya languages. About 80% of the population is of mixed European and Indian descent (named Mestizos).
Colour and spice are key to Central America’s mouth-watering cuisine. Whether you choose Creole cooking, familiar Italian and French flavours or the local Mestizo menu, ingredients come fresh from working farms and busy markets bringing the taste of each region to you. Special mentions go to Mexico for its global exported style of fajita, tortilla and burrito combo cooking and to Panama, the world’s leading producer of chocolate and Arabica coffee.
