Lerwick cruises

The most northerly point of the British Isles, little Lerwick can compete with the world’s most memorable locations on any cruise. The only town and capital of the Shetland Isles, Lerwick lies 100 miles from mainland Scotland and is nearer to Norway. Originally given as a gift in a Danish Princess’s dowry in the mid 1400s, Shetland has kept much of its Scandinavian feel to this day. There are many surprises in Lerwick, not least the fascinating local dialect, Doric, an intriguing mix of Pict, Old Norse, Gaelic and Ancient Greek. Discover Neolithic archaeological sites, Iron Age artefacts and mysterious standing stones.

Around the rugged coast, sea lochs, moor and mountains covered with coloured heather, there are stunning white sand beaches backed by towering cliff tops. The remote beauty spans an archipelago of 100 islands, only 15 of which are inhabited. Tourism in the Shetlands revolves around birders who come to see the Atlantic Puffin colonies, Guillemots and Razorbills. Lerwick is undoubtedly one of the UK’s top hidden treasures.
