    TREASURES OF TUSCANY

Two enchanting medieval hill towns await you, along with boundless countryside scenery and wonderful traditional Tuscan cuisine.

During your scenic drive you will pass medieval hill towns surrounded by beautiful valleys en route to central Tuscany. The landscape is adorned with cypresses, olive groves and vineyards.

The ‘Manhattan of Tuscany’, San Gimignano is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in the region. The striking skyline bristles with 13th century noble towers giving the town its skyscraper look. Dramatic walls surround the small town, and medieval charm can be found around every corner.

You will have free time to explore the quaint cobbled streets, admire the medieval architecture, browse the shops or simply relax in a nearby café. Even for first time visitors the surroundings may look familiar, as this was the location for the film ‘Tea with Mussolini’.

Tuscan specialities are on the menu for a rustic style luncheon at a delightful farmhouse. Enjoy fabulous views over the rolling hills and the simplicity of Tuscan cuisine.

Set on a high plateau, the Etruscan town of Volterra offers views over the countryside and roadways winding into the distance like ribbons. Volterra is renowned for its Etruscan artefacts and for the beautiful, locally mined alabaster statues. You will have free time to explore independently.

Note: This tour involves walking over steep cobbled streets, however the amount of walking is at guests’ own discretion. Flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The order of this tour may vary.

Discover the charms of the southern coastal town of Bosa and sample the famous Malvasia wine.

Journey by coach along the dramatic winding coastal road towards Bosa. Situated at the mouth of the River Temo, the town of Bosa has an atmospheric old quarter located at the foot of a hill, which is dominated by the medieval Castle of Serravalle.

Absorb the tranquil atmosphere of Exbury Gardens as you wander around the stunning gardens which are bursting with beautiful colours.

Your journey will take you through the beautiful New Forest National Park, where you will have the chance to see the famous New Forest ponies which graze on the wild heathland, before arriving at Exbury Gardens. Created in the 1920’s, Exbury Gardens are a spectacular 200 acre site, world famous for the Rothschild collection of rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, rare trees and shrubs. So spectacular are the gardens that the Queen of England enjoys private visits every year.

The Gardens have been specially created to reflect the changing colours of nature throughout the different seasons. During the spring the magnolias, camellias, azaleas and wisteria burst into flower, whilst the Daffodil Meadow is a carpet of glorious gold. The spectacular collection of over ten thousand rhododendron specimens is at its best with its display of beautiful colours.

During the tour there will be the opportunity to take a delightful 20 minute ride on a small narrow gauge steam railway to see parts of the Gardens not accessible on foot.

    PISA

The Leaning Tower is one of Italy’s most iconic landmarks, and the most popular tourist attraction in Pisa.

Originally an Etruscan trading post, Pisa grew to be one of the greatest commercial and seafaring towns in the Mediterranean. Today, Pisa offers Renaissance splendour intermingled with modern shops and lively cafés.

The setting for the famous Leaning Tower and splendid Cathedral is the Field of Miracles. Here you will also find the Baptistry and Campo Santo. You will enter the Cathedral, the finest Pisan-Romanesque buildings in Tuscany; its wonderful four-tiered façade is a medley of colonnades and intricate arcades.

The foundations of the Leaning Tower of Pisa began to subside when the builders reached the fourth storey, and each year it was said to lean a little more. A band around the tower prevented further lean, and the tower is now in the same condition as it was in 1810 (exterior visit only).

Time permitting, you will have a chance to do a spot of shopping and browse Pisa’s many souvenir stalls.

Note: The majority of this tour is on foot, flat comfortable walking shoes are recommended. There is a 15 minute walk to and from the coach park to the Field of Miracles. Shoulders and knees must be covered to enter the Cathedral. Entrance to the Tower is approximately 20 Euros. Euros are accepted for purchases.
