Stuart Usher
Stuart Usher - Military Historian

Stuart enjoyed an early career in the photographic branch of the Royal Air Force, before travelling extensively in the Middle East in a commercial capacity. He subsequently worked within the UK Ministry of Defence, before finally retiring in 2005.

During the 1970s he was involved in a number of significant expeditions to Norway, the first to recover for the RAF Museum, the then only surviving example of a World War 2 Halifax bomber from the bottom of a lake in Central Norway. This led on to his involvement in the search for HMS X5, one of three Royal Navy midget submarines lost to enemy action in Arctic Norway, and in March 2004 he participated in the making of a documentary about this action with the BBC. The programme went to air under the BBC Timewatch title The Lost Heroes.

He has also worked with Wexford Films and September Films in the production of further documentaries on the subject of HMS X5. Meanwhile, the search for the vessel continues.

Stuart’s presentations cover these expeditions, and also some of the lesser-known personalities and operations of World War II in the Scandinavian, Mediterranean and South East Asian theatres of the war.
