Willemstad, Curacao
|
Enjoy your visit to the capital of this former Dutch colony, divided in two by St. Anna Bay, the biggest harbour in the Caribbean. In Punda, the oldest part of the city, discover the beautiful 17th- and 18th-century Dutch-style architecture. Or stop by the floating market, so named because of the vendors who sail by sea from Venezuela each morning to sell their fresh vegetables, fruit and seafood.
|
Thing to Do / Highlights
PUNDA AND OTRABUNDA Nowhere else in the world, outside of the Netherlands, are there so many fantastic examples of 17th- and 18th-century Dutch colonial buildings. These neighbourhoods, along with the historic city centre in Willemstad, have been placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
MIKVE ISRAEL SYNAGOGUE The Mikve Israel Synagogue is one of the most historic synagogues in the world. The first synagogue built in Willemstad in 1674, it was replaced in 1703 by a much larger one. The synagogue is the oldest in continuous use in the Americas. Its remarkable architecture, solid mahogany interior, 18th-century copper chandeliers, and sand-covered floor have made it one of the best tourist attractions in Curaçao.
HATO CAVES The caves were formed thousands of years ago when old coral reefs emerged out of the sea when the island was formed. The stalagmites and stalactites are still being formed today. Guided tours take you along gently sloping trails through the caves’ different chambers, including a freshwater waterfall.
BOKA TABLA(Shete Boka National Park) Boka Tabla, one of Curaçao’s most spectacular sites, was carved by the pounding surf over millions of years. A wide cavern has been formed underneath a limestone terrace where you can watch and listen to the surf roll in. The coastal scenery at the park is fantastic.

Travel into the countryside, passing salt flats and flamingos before arriving at the Hato Caves. This dramatic collection of grottoes is filled with stalactites, stalagmites and crystal-clear pools, centuries in the making. At the foot of the Caves, is the Petroglyph Trail, where, time permitting, you may choose to take a short independent walk along, passing an ancient slave shelter and exceptional 1500-year-old religious scenes carved into the rock walls.
Afterwards you will head to the Curaçao Museum which was founded in 1946, and combines contemporary art with an exhibition of life in 19th century Curaçao. During your tour you will also enjoy a brief stop at the Chobolobo Liqueur Factory, giving you an ideal opportunity to taste and purchase the locally distilled Curaçao Liqueur.
Cross the Queen Juliana Bridge and catch a glimpse of the wonderful view over Willemstad. Note: There are approximately 50 steps to negotiate when entering the caves and some steps once inside. The terrain is uneven and gravel in parts and can become slippery. Comfortable, non-slip shoes are essential. Guests are requested not to touch the formations in Hato Caves for environmental reasons. Photography is only permitted in certain areas of the Caves. If you wish to remain in Willemstad after your tour, please note that you will be responsible for your own return to the quayside.
