Set your watches! One of Messina’s undoubted attractions is the duomo’s campanile. Known locally as the ‘great living clock’, its midday show of mythological figures and roaring lions is quite a spectacle.


Highlights

CATHEDRAL SQUARE
Built in the 12th-century by order of Henry VI of Hohenstauffen, the Duomo was reconstructed after the 1908 earthquake leveled much of Messina.

REGIONAL MUSEUM
The museum boasts an impressive collection of Mannerist and Baroque masterworks, including paintings by Caravaggio and Messina.

RIACE BRONZES
Fishermen discovered these colossal bronze statues in 1972. They had spent over 2,000 years on the ocean floor off Riace.
