Constanza, Romania

Once the Roman outpost of Tomis, where Ovid lived his last 10 years in exile, Constanza is filled with reminders of its past. A statue of the poet stands in front of its superb archaeological museum, which houses ancient glasswork, jewellery and frescoes; the vast, Art Nouveau casino and the domed St Peter and St Paul Orthodox Church are equally memorable.

Highlights

NATIONAL HISTORY AND ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM
This popular museum hosts a vast collection of artefacts from the Greek, Roman, and Daco-Roman civilizations including two statues which are considered the city’s protectors; "Glykon - The Fantastic Snake," dating from the 3rd century BC, and "Goddess Fortuna and Pontos," god of the Black Sea.

ART NOUVEAU CASINO
This magnificent casino was built in art nouveau style by architects, Daniel Renard and Petre Antonescu between the two new World Wars. In a fabulous location overlooking the sea you will admire the sumptuous architecture of this casino.

ST PETER AND ST PAUL ORTHODOX CHURCH
This Greco –Roman style church was built between 1883 and 1885. Unfortunately the church was damaged significantly during WWII and in 1951 restoration was completed with interior murals in a neo-Byzantine style combined with Romanian elements. Take particular focus of the iconostasis and pews, chandeliers and candlesticks which beautifully represent these styles.

AQUARIUM
The Constanta Aquarium was opened in 1958 and is home to an abundance of fish from the Black Sea and the Danube Delta – 60 species in total. The collection of sturgeons in this Aquarium is one of the largest in the world.
