Joseph M. Bishop, Ph.D.
As an oceanographer, meteorologist, and mariner Dr. Bishop has studied the environment for more than three decades. Dr. Joe has taught at Johns Hopkins, Catholic, and George Washington Universities. In addition, he has held positions at the National Advisory Committee on the Oceans and Atmosphere, was an oceanographer at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, a Meteorologist at the Federal Emergency Management Agency and an Officer in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Merchant Marine. Dr. Bishop has written 5 books, has been interviewed by the media on several occasions, including the NBC special “The Bermuda Triangle”, and has been a cruise lecturer for over 15 years.

Dr Peter Quartermaine

Dr Peter Quartermaine writes on maritime cultures, is a Research Associate of the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich UK, and a postgraduate consultant on nautical design to the University of Genova, Italy. He is a former Fellow of The Royal Society of Arts. After an Honours Degree in English and Philosophy, he gained his Doctorate with research in Australia on photography and painting during the mid nineteenth-century gold rush. As a scholar in the field of postcolonial writing, painting and photography, he has lectured throughout Europe and Australia, as well as in the States, has held research fellowships in Canberra, Perth, Venice and Miami Beach, and has published internationally on literature, painting, photography and film. His 1991 book on Australian author Thomas Keneally, author of Schindler’s Ark, is a standard work, as is his 1983 critical study of the Australian ‘magic realist’ painter Jeffrey Smart. His most recent book (with Bruce Peter) Cruise: Identity, Design and Culture, was published on in the UK and USA in 2006, and he is now writing a commissioned book on the Miami Beach architect Joe Farcus PA, sole designer of all new Carnival Cruises and Costa Cruises ships.

John Geiger

John Geiger was born in Ithaca, New York, and graduated in history from the University of Alberta. He is the author of five books of non-fiction, including the international best-sellers Frozen In Time: The Fate of the Franklin Expedition and Dead Silence: The Greatest Mystery in Arctic Discovery. His latest book, The Third Man Factor: The Secret to Survival in Extreme Environments, is being published by Penguin Books in January 2009. His work has been translated into nine languages. Television appearances include PBS NOVA and Channel 4 in ‘Arctic Passage’, The Discovery Channel in ‘Islands of Mystery’, Bravo! in ‘Flicker’ and BBC4 in ‘Wilderness Explored: Arctic’. His many radio appearances include the Gloria Hunningford Show. He was St. Clair Balfour Fellow at Massey College, Univ. of Toronto, is a Governor of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society, a Fellow of The Explorers Club of New York, and a Member of the Advisory Board of Wings Worldquest in New York. He received the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal.

Royal Astronomical Society
Cunard is proud to present the Royal Astronomical Society speakers on board for the second year. Fellows from the RAS will present talks, lectures and debates. Star gazing on deck (weather permitting) will also be offered with the use of telescopes with guided sessions from the experts. All guests are cordially invited to either bring along binoculars or use the on board telescope. Learn about the constellations, meteorites, space travel and how astronomy provides the scientific answers to many of life’s mysteries.
